Synfuel modified diesel. Third quarterly progress report, October 1, 1981-December 31, 1981

Description: Yanmar's effort was directed toward: (1) heat release analysis of SRC-II fuel in a prechamber diesel, and (2) improving the particulate trap to obtain reliable and consistent particulate concentration from a prechamber engine burning SRC-II blend fuel. Yanmar also disassembled the engine to check for excessive wear and deposits; none were found. Komatsu has started to obtain spark assisted data on the baseline engine. Although 100% SRC-II fuel was not attempted, spark assist has made significan… more

Knock-limited performance of ethanol blends in a spark-ignition engine

Description: An experimental study was performed to determine the effect of varying percentages of ethanol in fuel using a CFR engine operated at knock-limited compression ratio and maximum power spark timing. Blends of 85 octane primary reference fuel and ethanol in concentrations between 10 and 25% by volume were tested for performance, fuel economy, and exhaust emissions. The results indicated that when the engine was operated at knock-limited conditions at a constant equivalence ratio, the use of ethano… more

Pressurized fluidized-bed combustion part-load behavior. Volume I. Summary report

Description: Tests performed during 1980 to determine the part-load characteristics of a pressurized fluidized-bed combustor for a combined-cycle power plant and to examine its behavior during load changing are discussed. Part-load operation was achieved by varying the bed temperature by amounts between 200 to 300/sup 0/F and the bed depth from between 9 and 10 ft at rates varying between 0.2 ft/min and 0.5 ft/min. The performance at part-load steady-state conditions and during transient conditions is repor… more

Decommissioning of TA-21-153, a /sup 227/Ac contaminated old filter building

Description: An exhaust air filter building contaminated with /sup 227/Ac was decommissioned at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico, in 1978. The building was constructed in the late 1940s to clean exhaust air from several buildings at TA-21, DP Site. It was in service until March 1970. The project involved preliminary decontamination, dismantling the building, and burying the debris at an on-site waste disposal/storage area. This report presents the details on the decommissioning pro… more

Evaluation of the micro-carburetor

Description: A prototype sonic, variable-venturi automotive carburetor, developed by Micro Carburetor Corporation, was evaluated for its effects on vehicle performance, fuel economy, and exhaust emissions. A 350 CID Chevrolet Impala vehicle was tested on a chassis dynamometer over the 1975 Federal Test Procedure, urban driving cycle. The Micro-carburetor was tested and compared with stock and modified-stock engine configurations. Subsequently, the test vehicle's performance characteristics were examined wit… more

Corrosion inhibition by control of gas composition during mist drilling

Description: Chemical compositional specifications have been generated for inert gases which reduce drill string corrosion when used in conjunction with mist drilling processes. These specifications are based on the assumption that the corrosion rate is dependent on the dissolved gaseous species concentrations. Data taken both from the literature and from a mist drilling field test with nitrogen in Valle Grande, NM, relate corrosion rates to fluid compositions. These solution compositions are then associate… more

Soot formation in synthetic-fuel droplets. Second quarterly technical progress report

Description: The main objective of this program is to provide detailed information on methods of minimizing soot formation during synthetic liquid fuel combustion under conditions which minimize the formation of nitric oxides. The program comprises two main tasks, Fuel Screening Studies, and Flame Studies. The purpose of the first task is to investigate the impact of fuel properties on particulate production, to establish the importance of droplet size and examine atomizer effects, and to develop techniques… more

Ionospheric effects of rocket exhaust products: Skylab and HEAO-C

Description: This paper is about ionospheric F-layer depletions produced by chemical reactions with exhaust gases from large rockets. It describes a 2-dimensional computer model of the ionosphere, and it compares model results with experimental data on the structure and variability of the natural ionosphere, as well as data on ionospheric holes produced by the launches of Skylab (May, 1973) and HEAO-C (September, 1979). It also describes measurements made in conjunction with the HEAO-C launch. The computer … more

Advanced pulverized-coal combustor for control of NO/sub x/ emissions. Second quarterly report, December 25, 1980-April 3, 1981

Description: Second quarter results under the Advanced Pulverized Coal Combustor for Control of NO/sub x/ Emissions Program are reported. The program uses an idealized one-dimensional combustor, incorporating fuel staging. A comprehensive computer model is being developed under the program to allow NO mechanisms and rates to be extracted from the experimental data. During the quarter, modification of the existing PROF code to include particle effects was begun. Various aspects of the solution procedure are … more
