Proximity effect in Cu-Nb-Sn composites

Description: Heat capacities have been measured in the presence of magnetic fields for Cu-Nb and Cu-Nb/sub 3/Sn in situ composites in order to determine the size of the superconducting pair potential which is induced in the normal Cu region as a function of magnetic field. For the Cu-Nb composites the induced pair potential is found to be about 0.35 MeV in zero field, in agreement with de Gennes boundary conditions. With the application of a magnetic field, the energy gap declines quickly and above about 17… more

Molecular-dynamics study of 2-D melting: long-range potentials

Description: Melting of a two-dimensional electron lattice and a two-dimensional dipolar solid are studied using molecular-dynamics techniques. The existence of hysteresis and latent heat of melting are observed, and the melting transitions in the two cases are found to be first order. For an electron lattice the melting occurs between GAMMA=129 +- 3 whereas in the dipolar solid it is between GAMMA=62 +- 3, with a transition entropy of 0.3 k/sub B/ per particle for both the systems.

Physics of two-phase flow: choked flow

Description: It is shown that the basic equations governing the flow of a two-phase fluid, i.e., liquid and vapor, are natural extensions of those equations that describe single-phase flow. The exact form of the equations depends on the particular assumptions used to characterize the two-phase flow, i.e., the equations depend on the model chosen. In general the mathematical model is selected so as to retain as much of the physics of the phenomena as possible while at the same time permitting solutions to be… more

Melting and nucleation of a two-dimensional electron solid

Description: The method of molecular dynamics has been used to study dynamical and structural properties of a two-dimensional electron system. In the temperature variations of internal energy and self-diffusion constant, there are evidences of hysteresis as well as superheated solid and supercooled liquid. These features suggest that the 2-D electron solid melts via first-order transition; the melting occurs between GAMMA = 126 to 132, and the change in entropy on melting is 0.3 k/sub B/ per particle. The h… more

Performance of an EHD power generator with a two-fluid ejector

Description: A detailed analysis and method of calculation is presented for determining the complete thermodynamic cycle of a two-fluid electrohydrodynamic (EHD) power generator. The analysis takes fully into account the compressibility of the media. Parameters are included which express the thermodynamic losses in the various components of the overall system. The severe restriction on output created by the electrical breakdown limit of the medium is clearly shown. The method for computing the net-electrica… more

Topological bootstrap

Description: The general bootstrap idea is that all aspects of nature are determined by the requirement that they be consistent. An approach to the bootstrap idea is described in which local space-time is not a conceptual starting ingredient. The starting idea is a notion of elementary event, with a past and a future but not embedded in a continuous space time. Topics covered include entropy and the topological expansion, spin and electric charge, the quantum surface, topological supersymmetry, electroweak … more
