There are many desirable applications of powerful, rare-earth permanent magnets made of sintered SmCo/sub 5/ material within vacuum systems. One application is the use of large numbers of SmCo/sub 5/ magnets to provide the undulating magnetic field in a free-electron-laser wiggler structure.
