Gas chromatographic studies of the relative retention of the sulfur isotopes in carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, and sulfur dioxide

Description: A precision gas chromatograph, coupled to a quadrupole mass spectrometer and an on-line computer, was used to study the fractionation on Porasil A of the /sup 32/S//sup 34/S isotopic pair in a variety of sulfur-containing molecules. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) yielded an average ..cap alpha.. value of 1.00074 +- 0.00017 (standard deviation) for the temperature range 25/sup 0/C to 75/sup 0/C. The carbon disulfide (CS/sub 2/) value was 1.00069 +- 0.00023 for the range 53/sup 0/C to 103/sup 0/C, and th… more

Helium-jet coupled mass separator: advances and directions. [UNISOR; for nuclei far from beta stability]

Description: Results from the RAMA-88 system at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory are being used to design a new helium-jet and ion source system for the UNISOR project. This system should complement the existing integrated target-ion source to extend UNISOR's capabilities to include a majority of the chemical elements. This fast transport helium-jet system should permit studies of nuclides with half-lives down to 50 ms.

Basic studies of a gas-jet-coupled ion source for on-line isotope separation

Description: A hollow-cathode ion source was used in a gas-jet-coupled configuration to produce ion beams of fission products transported to it from a /sup 252/Cf fission source. Solid aerosols of NaCl and Ag were used effectively as activity carriers in the gas-jet system. Flat-plate skimmers provided an effective coupling of the ion source to the gas jet. Ge(Li) spectrometric measurements of the activity deposited on an ion-beam collector relative to that deposited on a pre-skimmer collector were used to … more

Development of advanced concepts for improved heavy water production technology. Tri-quarterly report, January 1-September 30, 1980

Description: Research into deuterium-from-protium isotope separation via both metal hydride chromatography and CO/sub 2/ laser multiple-photon dissociation (MPD) of trifluoromethane (CDF/sub 3//CHF/sub 3/) is discussed. Several new classes of alloy compositions, including Mg-rare earth, NiTi/sub x/, and (Ca+Ce,Zr,Ti)./sub 8//sup -/Ni/sub 4/Cu compounds, were evaluated for chromatograhic isotope separation; no tested alloy exhibited properties suitable for commercial deuterium separation. For deuterium separ… more

Effect of nuclear spin on chemical reactions and internal molecular rotation

Description: Part I of this dissertation is a study of the magnetic isotope effect, and results are presented for the separation of /sup 13/C and /sup 12/C isotopes. Two models are included in the theoretical treatment of the effect. In the first model the spin states evolve quantum mechanically, and geminate recombination is calculated by numerically integrating the collision probability times the probability the radical pair is in a singlet state. In the second model the intersystem crossing is treated vi… more

Diagnostics and performance evaluation of multikilohertz capacitors

Description: The observed performance of nanofarad polypropylene-silicone oil, mica paper, and polytetrafluoroethylene-silicone oil capacitors discharged in a 100-ns, 1-kA pulse with a pulse repetition frequency of 1 kHz is presented. The test facility circuit, diagnostic parameters, and the preliminary test schedule are outlined as a basis for discussion of the observed failure locations and proposed failure mechanisms. Most of the test data and discussion presented involves the polypropylene-silicone oil … more

Accelerator Mass Spectrometry and Radioisotope Detection at the Argonne FN Tandem Facility

Description: The Argonne FN tandem accelerator and standard components of its experimental heavy-ion research facility, have been used as a highly-sensitive mass spectrometer to detect several long-lived radioisotopes and measure their concentration by counting of accelerated ions. Background beams from isobaric nuclei have been eliminated by combining the dispersion from the energy loss in a uniform Al foil stack with the momentum resolution of an Enge split-pole magnetic spectrograph. Radioisotope concent… more

Targets produced in mass separators

Description: Isotopically enriched nuclear targets are prepared directly in the electromagnetic mass separators by allowing the resolved ion species to impinge on a suitable substrate. The calutron, a multi-milliampere mass separator, has been successful in producing ion-implanted targets for nuclear research and in the doping of semiconductors. The typical accelerating energy for this method is 40 keV, although this can be increased by using multiply-charged ions. For highly enriched targets from materials… more

Atomic vapor laser isotope separation at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory: a status report

Description: The field of laser induced chemistry began in earnest early in the 1970's with the initiation of major efforts in laser isotope separation (LIS) of uranium. Though many specialized, small-scale photochemical and diagnostic applications have been identified and evaluated experimentally, and continue to show promise, currently the only high payoff, large-scale applications remain LIS of special elements. Aspects of the physical scaling, technology status and economic basis of uranium LIS are exam… more

Laser cleanup of Pt group metals

Description: Due to increasing interest in chemical and fuel synthesis from syngas, the feasibility and practicality of purifying Pt group metals (Pd, Ru, Rh) using LIS technologies have been re-evaluated. Findings for the selective removal of /sup 107/Pd from Pd metal are described here. The selectivity of this technique is based on the angular momentum selection rules for atomic absorption of circularly polarized light. In principle, it is possible to selectively excite isotopes with non-zero nuclear spin… more

Single photon excimer laser photodissociation of highly vibrationally excited polyatomic molecules

Description: The ir + uv photodissociation of SF/sub 6/ has been performed using CO/sub 2/ and ArF lasers. The two-color photolysis significantly enhances the photodissociation process over ArF irradiation alone and is found to preserve the initial isotopic specificity of the ir excitation process.
