Double torsion testing: evaluation for ASTM E-24. 07. 02

Description: Equipment is described for double torsion testing for large and long polymer (e.g. PMMA) double torsion samples. Pyroceram 9606 and soda lime glass were cut to size and precracked and after torsion testing the crack length was measured. (FS)

Static correlations in semidilute polymer solutions

Description: This document reports small-angle x-ray scattering measurements of the concentration dependence of the correlation ranges in semi-dilute solutions of polystyrene in butanone. Results confirm the assumption that xi scales with concentration C (xi approx. C/sup -//sup x/) and xi are independent of the molecular weight. (DLC)

Some potential material supply constraints in solar systems for heating and cooling of buildings and process heat. (A preliminary screening to identify critical materials)

Description: Nine Solar Heating and Cooling of Buildings (SHACOB) designs and three Agricultural and Industrial Process Heat (AIPH) designs have been studied to identify potential future material constraints to their large scale installation and use. The nine SHACOB and three AIPH systems were screened and found to be free of serious future material constraints. The screening was carried out for each individual system design assuming 500 million m/sup 2/ of collector area installed by the year 2000. Also, t… more

Tritium protective clothing

Description: Occupational exposures to radiation from tritium received at present nuclear facilities and potential exposures at future fusion reactor facilities demonstrate the need for improved protective clothing. Important areas relating to increased protection factors of tritium protective ventilation suits are discussed. These areas include permeation processes of tritium through materials, various tests of film permeability, selection and availability of suit materials, suit designs, and administrativ… more

Development and evaluation of elastomeric materials for geothermal applications. Annual report, October 1977-December 1978

Description: The research involved formulation of commercially available materials and synthesis of new elastomers. Formulation studies at JPL and elsewhere produced a material having about 250-350 psi tensile strength and 30 to 80% elongation at 260/sup 0/C for at least 24 hours in simulated brine. The relationship between these laboratory test results and sealing performance in actual or simulated test conditions is not entirely clear; however, it is believed that no conventional formation or casing packe… more

Thick-target neutron and. gamma. -ray yields induced by medium-energy proton and deuteron bombardments

Description: Stopping samples of Lucite, Al, Fe, and /sup 238/U (Fe, and /sup 238/U) were irradiated with 330 MeV deuterons (260 MeV protons). For each target, neutron energy spectra and prompt ..gamma..-ray yields were measured using the time-of-flight technique. The detector was a right cylindrical volume of deuterated benzene, 12.5-cm diameter x 7.5-cm long, located at 110/sup 0/ to the incident beam direction. The neutron yield and the prompt ..gamma..-ray yield were found to depend upon the atomic numb… more

Alternate materials of construction for geothermal applications. Progress report No. 18, January-March 1979

Description: Progress in a program to develop non-metallic materials for use in geothermal processes is described. To date, several high temperature polymer and polymer concrete systems were formulated, laboratory and field tests were performed in brine, flashing brine, and steam at temperatures up to 260/sup 0/C (500/sup 0/F), and economic studies were started. Laboratory data for exposure times > 2 years are available. Results are also available from field exposures of up to 24 months in five geothermal e… more

Energy/material flows associated with cyclic petrochemicals

Description: A detailed product flow analysis, starting with the refinery reformate stream, was prepared to identify the major products of interest. The selection of the products and their derivatives for detailed analysis was based on 1978 consumption data which is reported. The products selected for detailed analysis were: Benzene (from Toluene), Polystyrene, Polyester fibers, Cyclohexane, Nylon 6,6, Nylon 6, ABS + SAN, Phenolic resins, Urethane foams, Unsaturated polyesters and SBR. Data on the selling p… more

Third Personnel Dosimetry Intercomparison Study

Description: The third Personnel Dosimetery Intercomparison Study was held at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Dosimetry Applications Research Facility during March 15--16, 1977. The Health Physics Research Reactor (HPRR), used unshielded, with a 12-cm-thick Lucite shield or a 13-cm-thick steel shield, provided three neutron and gamma-ray spectra. The characteristics of these fields such as neutron energy spectra, intensity, and uniformity had been measured previously during nuclear accident dosimetry stud… more

Polymer surface coatings for downconversion of uv radiation and inhibition of photodegradation. Semiannual technical status report, June 1978--January 1979

Description: Cerous (III) polymethacrylate (CPMA), prepared by saponifying a commercial polymethyl methacrylate (PLEXIGLAS) and subsequently neutralized with cerous nitrate, were cast into film from its ethyl acetate solution. CPMA films were subjected to intense uv radiation in order to accelerate the solarization, and they were found to be substantially less susceptible to uv induced degradation than the control which was the film cast from polymethacrylic acid (PMA). A set of CPMA coated PLEXIGLAS films … more

Thermal expansion of glasses at low temperatures

Description: The linear thermal expansion coefficient (..cap alpha.. = (par. deltalnL/par. deltaT)/sub p/) was measured at temperatures to 1.2K for two amorphous solids, fused silica and PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate, plexiglas), using a parallel plate capacitor differential dilatometer. The low temperature expansion coefficients for these solids have the same temperature dependences as the specific heats, and show a contribution which is linear in the temperature and which can be associated with the postula… more
