Some problems of validation and testing of numerical air pollution models. Technical report No. 21

Description: Uses of deterministic and stochastic models in air pollution modeling are reviewed briefly. An analysis of the problem of validation and testing of a general air pollution numerical model is developed, and the different diagnostic checks applied in the literature are discussed in order to identify a good validation procedure in this field. A simple numerical model for the short-term real-time forecasting of CO hourly values in the St. Louis, Missouri area was developed. (JGB)

Quasi-static strength and creep deformational characteristics of bedded salt from the Carey mine near Lyons, Kansas

Description: This report presents the results of a laboratory effort which was undertaken to determine mechanical properties of salt from Lyons, Kansas. Another goal of the experimental work was to define testing procedures, calibrations and data reduction during the process of generating strength data. Mechanical properties such as modulus of deformation and principal strain ratio were incorporated into simulations of Project Salt Vault using finite element methods. Deformational behavior of Lyons salt sub… more

Tertiary oil recovery: potential application and constraints

Description: The technology of tertiary oil recovery methods is described and potential economic and environmental constraints to future commercial application are identified. Oil recoverable by tertiary techniques represents a domestic resource of between 11- and 42-billion barrels. Estimates of additional oil supplies from tertiary methods by the year 2000 range from 1 to 8 million barrels per day, depending on the price of oil and the rate of technological development. The principal constraints to large-… more

Weldon Spring dose calculations. [Site of former feed materials plant in Missouri]

Description: In response to a request by the Oak Ridge Operations (ORO) Office of the Department of Energy (DOE) for assistance to the Department of the Army (DA) on the decommissioning of the Weldon Spring Chemical Plant, the Health and Safety Research Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) performed limited dose assessment calculations for that site. Based upon radiological measurements from a number of soil samples analyzed by ORNL and from previously acquired radiological data for the Weld… more

Solar-powered irrigation systems study: technical summary report. Volume II. Agricultural energy and fuel price projections for Arizona, California, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas

Description: This study is part of a larger research effort to project U.S. energy demand and energy prices by state from 1985 to 2015; these projections will be used to assess the potential penetration into the U.S. energy economy by specific solar systems. The detailed agricultural energy price forecasts for the 1985-2015 period used by The Aerospace Corporation to assess the market potential of solar-powered irrigation system is presented. Energy price forecasts in constant 1977 dollars are presented by … more

Advanced development of fine coal desulfurization and recovery technology. Annual technical progress report, October 1 1976--September 1977. [54 references]

Description: Work has been carried out to develop and improve several promising methods for desulfurizing and recovering fine-size coal. These methods included froth flotation, selective oil agglomeration, pelletization, and a chemical desulfurization process which involves leaching fine coal with a hot dilute solution of sodium carbonate containing dissolved oxygen or air under pressure. This process is an oxydesulfurization process which utilizes an alkaline solution instead of an acidic solution for leac… more
