Design, manufacture, test and delivery of a 230 kV extruded irradiated crosslinked polyethylene cable. Final report

Description: A project was initiated to develop a 230 kV solid dielectric cable for use in underground transmission. The dielectric is to be polyethylene, crosslinked by electron bombardment. Compared to the more conventional chemically crosslinked polyethylene, the irradiated cable is expected to contain less sensitive defects and thus be more suitable for a 230 kV rating. A toroidally shaped diode was developed to provide a uniform radiation dose to a thick-walled coaxial cable. The diode is to receive an… more

Double-drift beam bunching systems

Description: The double-drift beam bunching system consists of two bunchers that are separated in space, independently driven but phase-locked together. The second buncher to be encountered by the beam is driven at twice the frequency of the first. This system offers an attractive alternative to conventional one- and two-frequency systems since its bunching efficiency is about twice that for a single frequency system and about 25% larger than that for a two-frequency system in which both harmonics are impos… more

Intensified CCD for ultrafast diagnostics

Description: Many of the present laser fusion diagnostics are recorded on either ultrafast streak cameras or on oscilloscopes. For those experiments in which a large volume of data is accumulated, direct computer processing of the information becomes important. We describe an approach which uses a RCA 52501 back-thinned CCD sensor to obtain direct electron readouts for both the streak camera and the CRT. Performance of the 100 GHz streak camera and the 4 GHz CRT are presented. Design parameters and computer… more

Development of miniaturized proximity focused streak tubes for visible light and x-ray applications. Final report and progress, April-September 1977

Description: Research performed to develop miniaturized proximity focused streak camera tubes (PFST) for application in the visible and the x-ray modes of operation is described. The objective of this research was to provide an engineering design and to fabricate a visible and an x-ray prototype tube to be provided to LASL for test and evaluation. Materials selection and fabrication procedures, particularly the joining of beryllium to a suitable support ring for use as the x-ray window, are described in det… more

Negative ion source and beam development at BNL

Description: Neutral beam injector based on H/sup -/ ions for Tokamak fusion reactors is gradually evolving from the accumulated research results at BNL. Progress is reported on both Penning and magnetron surface plasma ion sources for direct extraction of negative ions. Schemes for transporting and accelerating of the ion beam are also described. Test results of the gas jets for H/sup -/ ..-->.. H/sup 0/ conversion are also included. The next generation of a high energy neutral injector test stand to be… more

Advanced thermionic energy conversion. Joint highlights and status report, January--February 1978

Description: The status of negative ion converter tests for improving converter performance by reducing the hydrogen negative ion impurities is outlined. Construction of various thermionic converter test models is discussed. An analytical model of a converter with an argon plasmatron ion source is described. (WHK)

Duopigatron ion source studies

Description: Ion source performance characteristics consisting of total ion current, ion energy distribution, mass distribution, and ion current density distribution were measured for several models of a duopigatron. Variations on the duopigatron design involved plasma expansion cup material and dimensions, secondary cathode material, and interelectrode spacings. Of the designs tested, the one with a copper and molybdenum secondary cathode and a mild steel plasma expansion cup proved to give the best result… more

Fundamentals of klystron testing

Description: Fundamentals of klystron testing is a text primarily intended for the indoctrination of new klystron group test stand operators. It should significantly reduce the familiarization time of a new operator, making him an asset to the group sooner than has been experienced in the past. The new employee must appreciate the mission of SLAC before he can rightfully be expected to make a meaningful contribution to the group's effort. Thus, the introductory section acquaints the reader with basic concep… more

Satellite power system. Concept development and evaluation program

Description: The Reference System description emphasizes technical and operational information required in support of environmental, socioeconomic, and comparative assessment studies. Supporting information has been developed according to a guideline of implementing two 5 GW SPS systems per year for 30 years beginning with an initial operational data of 2000 and with SPS's being added at the rate of two per year (10 GW/year) until 2030. The Reference System concept, which features gallium--aluminum--ar… more
