The mercury ions in Hg-delta AsF/sub 6/ form arrays of interpenetrating infinite chains with a mean separation between ions which is incommensurate with the AsF/sub 6/ sublattice. According to understanding based mainly upon a recent series of neutron scattering experiments and related theoretical work, the chains are essentially one-dimensional liquids at room temperature, and are free to flow down extremely narrow channels (approximately 7.5 A in diameter) formed by the AsF/sub 6/ sublattice.…
