Preliminary studies of the alteration of a granite by an artificial hydrothermal system

Description: Solution channels in quartz, microcline, and plagioclase of a granite were produced by exposure of the rock to an artificial hydrothermal system. Electron microprobe analyses, beam-scanning photographs, and element profiles show that the mineral grains are homogeneous and unaltered within a few micrometers of the channels. The channels, which are 3 to 7 ..mu.. in diameter, appear to have formed by removal of material in solution. In the sample material, no new minerals produced by alteration or… more

Ion backscattering studies of Synthoil catalyst materials. [2 MeV /sup 4/He/sup +/ ions]

Description: Energetic ion backscattering has been used to analyze new and used CoMo catalyst pellets in support of the SYNTHOIL Process catalyst deactivation study. These analyses enabled the first absolute quantitative determinations of atomic composition and compositional gradients within the pellets. In cases where they can be compared, the backscattering data agree with data from parallel analysis programs using the electron microprobe and Auger spectroscopy. Enrichment of Mo and Ca in the outer 2 ..mu… more

Electron microprobe analyses of minerals in Precambrian rocks at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory Geothermal Test Site, Jemez Mountains, New Mexico

Description: Electron microprobe analyses are presented for plagioclase, biotite, hornblende, magnetite, microcline, and chlorite in core samples from Granite Test Hole One at the Los Alamos Geothermal Test Site. The analyses and accompanying petrographic descriptions characterize material that is being exposed to artificial hydrothermal systems in laboratory experiments. Plagioclase in granitoid rocks exhibits significant compositional variation (albite rims on calcic oligoclase) and alteration to sericite… more

New standard for electron microanalysis of organic sulfur in coal

Description: A standard for quantitative electron microprobe analysis of organic sulfur in coal has been prepared and tested. The standard consists of spherical carbon beads 75 to 200 ..mu..m in diameter that contain 4.1 +- 0.1 weight percent sulfur. The composition of the standard is very similar to coal and is therefore well suited for coal studies. Resulting data from use of the standard indicates: (1) a consistent relative order of various coal macerals with respect to organic sulfur content; (2) higher… more

Reduction of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ in niobium--lithium systems at 1000/sup 0/C

Description: Various grades of aluminum oxide (Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/) were sealed inside capsules of niobium and niobium-1% zirconium alloy which were then exposed to liquid lithium for 3000 hr at 1000/sup 0/C. Similar unsealed capsules were exposed to a high vacuum. Reduction of the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ occurred in the lithium-treated capsules, but no reaction occurred in the vacuum-treated capsules. Metallography and electron-microprobe analysis showed that reaction products in the form of compounds of niobium, … more

Sodium tungsten bronze thin films by rf sputtering

Description: Polycrystalline Na/sub x/WO/sub 3/ films were produced by rf sputtering. Films of low x-value resulted when co-sputtering WO/sub 3/ on a Na/sub 0.83/WO/sub 3/ target, and Na/sub 0/./sub 83/ on WO/sub 3/ target. Films of high x and of mixed phase were produced by sputtering a powder mixture of Na/sub 2/WO/sub 4/ and WO/sub 3/ on a tungsten target. Of the sputtering parameters studied, the substrate temperature is the most critical with temperatures above 500/sup 0/C producing films which were cu… more

Synthesis and characterization of some reduced zirconium halides

Description: High temperature equilibrium experiments have revealed several new zirconium subhalides as well as nonstoichiometry among the better-known trihalides. Product characterization by standard gravimetric and electron microprobe analyses was allied with x-ray powder and single crystal work. Accurate lattice parameters for phases of known cell type were determined from high precision x-ray powder data obtained by Guinier methods with Si powder as an internal standard. Up to 50 g batches of ZrCl and t… more

Feasibility of achieving 15 nm resolution with a scanning microprobe using a liquid gallium ion source

Description: Scanning ion microprobe with secondary ion mass analyzer can locate specific stable isotopes with a resolution well below that of radioautography. An ion source was developed which consists of a cone of liquid Ga. The scanning microprobe is intended to be used in tracer experiments similar to these handled in radioautography. The problem of radiation damage is considered.
