Relative availability of selected trace elements from coal fly ash and Lake Michigan sediment

Description: The concentration of greater than 1 ..mu..m coal fly ash particles in Lake Michigan surface waters was found to be 10/sup 5/ to 10/sup 6/ per liter. With an expected residence time of one year, this concentration implies a flux to the sediment of 10/sup 6/ to 10/sup 7/ particles/cm/sup 2//yr, or about 10/sup -6/ to 10/sup -5/ g/cm/sup 2//yr. The release of trace elements from fly ash and sediment has been studied using Chelex-100 resin to simulate leaching at high dilutions in natural media. Mn… more

Transport and transformation of pollutant in the Lake Michigan area. [Pollutants from the Chicago and Milwaukee areas]

Description: The transport and the transformation of pollutants emitted from the Milwaukee and the Chicago areas were studied during August 1976. The study is part of the MAP3S program sponsored by ERDA--DBER. The experiments were conducted in approximately Lagrangian frames of reference utilizing two instrumented aircraft and surface support units. It was found that: 1) build up of ozone downwind of the areas occurred; 2) sulfate concentrations were higher in the urban plume than those upwind, and progress… more

Water Resources Research Program: Pollution of Coastal Waters Off Chicago by Sinking Plumes From the Indiana Harbor Canal

Description: On March 2, 1977, during sinking-plume conditions, a portion of the water of the Indiana Harbor Canal (IHC) was injected with samarium and rhodamine-dye tags and a section of the IHC's surface was covered with simulated oily waste tagged with dysprosium. Water samples were taken downcurrent, over a 54-hr period, from a vessel and from the raw-water streams from the intakes at Chicago's South Water Filtration Plant (SWFP). Bottom currents and water temperatures were measured almost continuously … more

Nutrient enrichment and eutrophication of Lake Michigan. Progress report, November 1, 1971--September 30, 1977

Description: Data on mixing processes in the nearshore zone of Lake Michigan are presented. Emphasis was placed on an area near Holland, Michigan where typical summer mixing patterns of the Kalamazoo River plume between the nearshore zone and mid-lake water mass were studied. Results showed that the nutrient load of the river's tributaries studied had a marked effect on the nearshore zone and the standing crop and species composition of phytoplankton. Data are included on the content of phosphates, silica, … more
