High-pressure studies of soft mode transitions in solids

Description: An overview of the soft mode concept and of high pressure studies of soft mode transitions in solids is given. Typical results on displacive ferroelectric (SbSI) antiferrodistortive (Gd/sub 2/(MoO/sub 4/)/sub 3/ and BaMnF/sub 4/) transitions as well as on coupled proton-phonon soft mode transitions (KH/sub 2/PO/sub 4/) are used to demonstrate that hydrostatic pressure can strongly modify the balance of forces responsible for soft mode behavior. Emphasis is placed on the physical implications of… more

Magnetic, optical, and magneto-optical behavior of LiTbF/sub 4/ and KTb/sub 3/F/sub 10/ crystals. [LiTb/sub 5/. Y/sub 5/. F/sub 4/, LiTb/sub 25/. Gd/sub 75/. F/sub 4/]

Description: The magnetic, optical, and magneto-optical behavior of the crystals LiTbF/sub 4/, LiTb./sub 5/Y./sub 5/F/sub 4/, LiTb./sub 25/Gd./sub 75/F/sub 4/, and KTb/sub 3/F/sub 10/ were measured. The temperature, wavelength, and magnetic field dependence of the Faraday rotation in these materials and the wavelength dependence of the optical absorption are presented. The magnetic ordering found in these crystals and its relation to optical phenomena is also discussed. 4 figures, 1 table.

Magnetic and superconducting transitions in Gd/sub x/Er/sub 1-x/Rh/sub 4/B/sub 4/ and Gd/sub x/Y/sub 1-x/Rh/sub 4/B/sub 4/. [Reentrant behavior]

Description: The magnetic and superconducting transition temperatures and upper critical fields have been measured for Gd/sub x/Er/sub 1-x/Rh/sub 4/B/sub 4/ and Gd/sub x/Y/sub 1-x/Rh/sub 4/B/sub 4/. The pressure dependence of T/sub c/ for the Er system for x less than or equal to 0.05 is 0.5 x 10/sup -2/ K/kbar. Both systems exhibit reentrant behavior, that is a superconducting transition followed by a magnetic transition at a lower temperature that destroys the superconductivity. For the Er system, the ini… more
