Effect of liquid waste discharges from steam generating facilities

Description: This report contains a summary of the effects of liquid waste discharges from steam electric generating facilities on the environment. Also included is a simplified model for use in approximately determining the effects of these discharges. Four basic fuels are used in steam electric power plants: three fossil fuels--coal, natural gas, and oil; and uranium--presently the basic fuel of nuclear power. Coal and uranium are expected to be the major fuels in future years. The following power plant e… more

Electrolysis based hydrogen storage system. Semiannual report, January 1--June 30, 1977

Description: The work described in this report was accomplished during the period January 1 to June 30, 1977 on an ERDA-sponsored program aimed at improving the cost and efficiency of electrolytic hydrogen production and at developing the technique of using metal-hydride hydrogen storage for stationary and transportation applications. The related work of organizations having subcontracts with BNL is included; and the effort on natural-gas supplementation, systems analysis, and project management of the ERDA… more

Storage and release of radiation energy in salt in radioactive waste repositories

Description: The results showed that appreciable amounts of gamma-radiation energy can be stored under certain exposure conditions. The results also showed that thermally activated annealing takes place at elevated temperatures and that the rates of this annealing at temperatures above about 150/sup 0/C are such that negligible amounts of energy will be stored in salt in a repository where the salt is at temperatures above about 150/sup 0/C. We are not able to show that thermally activated annealing takes p… more

TATB: water amination process

Description: A pilot-plant scale process for animation of sym-trichlorotrinitrobenzene (TCTNB) in the presence of water to produce sym-triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB) has been developed. With this process the chlorine content from trapped impurities is reduced from the typical 0.5 to 1.0 percent range fown to about 0.1 percent. This reduction in chlorine is accompanied by a decrease in size of the median particle by 5 to 10 ..mu..m.

X-0290 coupon test. Period covered: January--March 1977. [Effect of Cl impurities on other materials]

Description: X-0290 is a plastic-bonded explosive composed of 95/5 weight percent of triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB) and Kel-F 800, respectively. The coupon test is an accelerated aging test which is being used to investigate what effects low and high levels of chlorine impurities in the TATB will have on other materials. The testing techniques used to evaluate the degradation of the materials in this test are discussed. This is the first progress report and the results that have been obtained are given, but… more

Some recent results on. mu. /sup -/transfer in systems with bound hydrogen

Description: Preliminary results are given for two sets of experiments conducted in order to obtain information on the role of bound hydrogen in possible ..mu.. transfer processes by comparisons of muonic Lyman spectra. Muonic x-ray intensity patterns of Cl in CCl/sub 4/, CH/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ and a CCl/sub 4/ + C/sub 8/H/sub 18/ mixture. Secondly the same type of experiment was performed but with F as the test element. Muonic x-ray spectra of the normal and deutero forms of a compound were compared.

Crossed-molecular beam apparatus time-of-flight computer interface. [Angular and energy distributions]

Description: A variety of gas phase reactions of barium and tin atoms were studied using a crossed molecular beams machine with a universal quadrupole mass filter based detection system incorporating a time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer for velocity analysis. Center-of-mass (CM) reactive product recoil angle and relative recoil energy distributions were measured for the following reactions: (1) Ba + N/sub 2/O--BaO + N/sub 2/, (2) Ba + CO/sub 2/--BaO + CO, (3) Ba + O/sub 2/--BaO + O, (4) Sn + Cl/sub 2/--SnCl … more

MAP3S precipitation chemistry network: first periodic summary report, (September 1976--June 1977)

Description: The MAP3S Precipitation Chemistry Network consists of four sites (to be expanded to 8 to 12) located in a north-south line from northern New York State to northwestern Virginia. Precipitation event samples are collected by cooperating site operators, using specially developed sampling equipment. The concentration data collected over the period September 22, 1976 (first collected sample) to July 1, 1977, are listed as a summary of the data reported monthly throughout the year. Samples were chemi… more

Chlorine free synthesis of TATB

Description: The principal objective of this endeavor is to produce TATB that is free of the potentially corrosive ammonium chloride. Previous attempts to synthesize a chlorine free precursor to TATB have resulted in difficult to separate mixtures which are the result of side reactions. A new variation of the present process has been tried on a laboratory scale which appears to produce TATB with one to two orders of magnitude less ammonium chloride than the standard process. Several other possible synthesis… more

Suspended particulate matter in New York City: element concentrations as a function of particle size and elevation above street. [Determinations made by proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) analysis]

Description: Aerosol samples were simultaneously collected at two street-level locations and the 16th floor, on two sides of a Manhattan city block. The results of PIXE analysis, together with CO and SO/sub 2/ data, show that the concentrations of substances emitted at street level (CO, Pb, etc) are significantly less at the 16th floor whereas particulate sulfur shows little variation. Other conclusions are presented.
