Regional transport model of atmospheric sulfates

Description: A regional transport model of atmospheric sulfates was developed. This quasi-Lagrangian three-dimensional grid numerical model uses a detailed SO/sub 2/ emission inventory of major anthropogenic sources in the eastern U.S. region and observed meteorological data during an episode as inputs. The model accounts for advective transport and turbulent diffusion of the pollutants. The chemical transformation of SO/sub 2/ and SO/sub 4//sup 2 -/ and the deposition of the species at the earth's surface … more

Polyketones and polysulfones for conservation in the ethylene polymer market

Description: Because of the increase in cost of foreign oil, ethylene costs have increased markedly within the last several years. There is a sizable incentive to reduce raw material cost for basic polymer manufacture. Polyketones, synthesized from ethylene and CO, and polysulfones, synthesized from ethylene and SO/sub 2/, utilizing high energy radiation, offers one such possibility. CO and SO/sub 2/, usually considered as wastes and pollutants from fossil fuel burning power plants, are converted to useful … more

Estimating agricultural production and its response to SO/sub 2/ in the Pacific Northwest. [Fossil-fuel power plant effluents]

Description: The construction and operation of a coal-fired power plant and associated support facilities (mines, roads, towns, tracks) present a significant impact on the natural and man-made ecosystems in the surrounding area. The major sources of impact are changes in the land area available for agriculture, changes in crops cultivated in the remaining area, and the effects of stack effluents on plant growth and production. This paper describes a potentially useful means of estimating agricultural produc… more

Regenerative process for desulfurization of high temperature combustion and fuel gases. Quarterly progress report No. 3, October 1--December 31, 1976

Description: A regenerative process based on using carbon in coal ashes for lime regeneration has been studied. Ten sulfation/regeneration cycles using Greer limestone have been conducted in a TG system and there was no sign of weakening of the SO/sub 2/ sorption activity. Work on the regenerative process based on silicates is being continued. For pure silicates, the sulfation rate of the monocalcium silicate appeared to be higher than that of the calcined Greer limestone and dicalcium silicate; the latter … more

Electrical aerosol analyzer: calibration and performance

Description: The Electrical Aerosol Analyzer (EAA) was calibrated by means of monodisperse aerosols generated by two independent techniques. In the 0.02 to 1 ..mu..m diameter range, the aerosol was generated by electrostatic classification. In the range between 0.007 and 0.03 ..mu..m, the aerosols were generated by the photo-oxidation of SO/sub 2/ in a smog chamber. Calibration data are presented showing the performance of the EAA as an aerosol detector and as a size distribution analyzer.

Classical dynamics of triatomic system: energized harmonic molecules

Description: The dynamical assumptions underlying the Slater and RRK classical-mechanical theories of unimolecular reaction rates are investigated. The predictions of these theories for several nonlinear, triatomic, harmonically-bonded molecular models are compared with the results obtained from the integration of the classical equations of motion. The accuracy of the small-vibration and weak-coupling assumptions are found to break down at energies above about one quarter of a bond dissociation energy. None… more

Model for rain composition and the washout of sulfur dioxide

Description: A continuous model for the washout of sulfur dioxide from the atmosphere by rain was developed in which account was taken of mass transfer of SO/sub 2/ into well-mixed drops, ionic equilibrium of sulfur compounds in solution, oxidation of dissolved species to sulfate ion, and presence in the rain of background strong acid or base. Expressions were developed to predict the composition of raindrops as a function of fall distance, the time scale of atmospheric SO/sub 2/ removal, and ground level c… more

SO/sub 2/(/sup 3/B/sub 1/) photosensitized isomerization of cis and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene

Description: Lifetime measurements of SO/sub 2/(/sup 3/B/sub 1/) molecules in the presence of cis and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene were made by using time resolved laser induced phosphorescence. Quantum yields for the SO/sub 2/ photosensitized isomerization of cis and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene were made. A kinetic treatment of the initial quantum yield data was consistent with the formation of a polarized charge-transfer intermediate whenever SO/sub 2/(/sup 3/B/sub 1/) molecules and one of the 1,2-dichloroet… more

Relation of air pollution to mortality: a critique

Description: A study published in May, 1976, by Schimmel and Murawski concluded that although there is some excess in daily mortality attributable to SO/sub 2/ on the basis of regression, SO/sub 2/ itself is actually harmless, but is associated with other as yet unidentified pollutants that are the real cause of excess mortality. The conclusions are criticized in regard to the following: the use of a single air pollution station to represent the entire metropolitan area; methodological weaknesses in the lin… more
