Titanium distribution in uranium--titanium alloys. [0. 5 and 0. 75 wt % Ti]

Description: Electron-beam microprobe analyses were used to assess the uniformity of titanium distribution in both as-cast and heat-treated uranium-0.5 weight percent titanium (U-0.5 Ti) and uranium-0.75 weight percent titanium (U-0.75 Ti) alloys. Microsegregation due to coring was readily smoothed by heat treatment, but long-range variability remained (on the order of 0.1 wt percent). An attempt was made to examine titanium macrosegregation by a scanning image analysis measurement of the volume fraction of… more

Electron microprobe studies of Mahogany Zone and Devonian oil shales. [Preliminary results on characterization of rock matrices]

Description: Preliminary results are reported on studies to determine the usefulness of the electron microprobe in characterizing the rock matrices of Western and Devonian shales. The electron microprobe used in this study was equipped with three x-ray spectrometers of differing wavelength capabilities, allowing all elements heavier than Be to be studied. The rapid rastering technique was used to determine the distribution of Fe, S, Ca, Al, and C in Mahogany Zone shale. Scanning electron micrographs and x-r… more

Detection of delta-ferrite to sigma transformation using metallographic techniques involving ferromagnetic colloid, color etching, and microprobe analysis

Description: The mechanical properties of ferrite-containing austenitic stainless steel base metal and weldments are usually adversely affected by prolonged exposure to temperatures in the 482 to 900/sup 0/C (900 to 1652/sup 0/F) range. One cause of the property alteration is related to the transformation of relatively ductile delta-ferrite to less ductile sigma-phase. Attempts to identify sigma and delta-ferrite phases by color staining techniques alone are well documented; however, the results are often q… more

Compositions of airborne plutonium-bearing particles from a plutonium finishing operation

Description: The elemental composition of 111 plutonium-bearing particles was determined (using an electron microprobe) as part of a program to investigate the origin and behavior of the long-lived transuranic radionuclides released from fuel reprocessing facilities at the Savannah River Plant. These particles, collected from wet-cabinet and room-air exhausts from the plutonium finishing operation (JB-Line), were between 0.4 and 36 ..mu..m in diameter. Ninety-nine of the particles were found to be aggregate… more

Examination of failed drill bit from geysers field

Description: A Reed Tool Compsny 73JA drill bit used in the Geysers geothermal field failed primarily because of severe frictional wear of the nose bearing. There is no indication that well temperature by itself caused failure of any part of the bit. However, the high well temperature together with the friction heat generated produced a temperature which lead to softening and premature wear failure of the nose bearing.

Experimental x-ray mass attenuation coefficients between the M/sub 1/ and M/sub V/ absorption edge of rhenium

Description: Experimental values obtained for x-ray mass attenuation coefficients between the M/sub I/ and M/sub V/ absorption edges of rhenium are presented below. Also presented is a brief discussion of the experimental procedure.

Kinetics and mechanism of desulfurization and denitrogenation of coal-derived liquids. Sixth quarterly report, September 21, 1976--December 20, 1976

Description: Two high-pressure flow microreactors continue to function effectively for studies of the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene, methyl-substituted dibenzothiophene and also for studies of the hydrodenitrogenation of quinoline. The hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene has been examined in a flow system in a totally reproducible fashion free from catalyst deactivation for extended periods. The reaction is first-order in dibenzothiophene, and all of the reaction products except H/sub 2/S ar… more

Kinetics and mechanism of desulfurization and denitrogenation of coal-derived liquids. Fourth quarterly report, March 20--June 20, 1976

Description: The high-pressure liquid-phase flow microreactors are operating satisfactorily in both hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation studies after minor modifications to allow in situ sulfiding. The hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene occurs by a simple network giving only H/sub 2/S and biphenyl as primary reaction products. The reaction network for quinoline hydrodenitrogenation has been determined, and a kinetic model developed to allow quantitative determination of the first-order kinet… more
