Development of a prototype high temperature amplifier for geothermal well logging. Final report

Description: A high temperature amplifier for use in geothermal well logging was developed. This development was based on the use of ceramic vacuum tubes as the active circuit element, since these tubes have the capability to operate in the high ambient temperature environment. The primary goal of this program was to design, build, and deliver a prototype amplifier capable of continuous operation in a 250/sup 0/C environment. A development program designed to meet this goal covered four phases. These phases… more

Principal considerations in large energy-storage capacitor banks

Description: Capacitor banks storing one or more megajoules and costing more than one million dollars have unique problems not often found in smaller systems. Two large banks, Scyllac at Los Alamos and Shiva at Livermore, are used as models of large, complex systems. Scyllac is a 10-MJ, 60-kV theta-pinch system while Shiva is a 20-MJ, 20-kV energy system for laser flash lamps. A number of design principles are emphasized for expediting the design and construction of large banks. The sensitive features of th… more

Particle acceleration by collective effects

Description: Successful acceleration of protons and other ions has been achieved experimentally in this decade by a number of different collective methods. The attainment of very high accelerating fields has been established although so far the acceleration distance has been confined to only a few centimeters. Efforts are in progress to understand the accelerating mechanisms in detail and, as a result, to devise ways of extending considerably the acceleration distance. A review is given of the current progr… more

Experimental observations on long pulse intense ion diode operation

Description: An experiment in which a long pulse electron beam diode is converted to a reflex ion diode is reported. The results further substantiate the model of reflex ion diode behavior as well as extend the duration of ion mode operation to greater than 500 nsec.

Statistical approach for estimating the reliability of highly stressed xenon flashlamps

Description: Shiva consists of 2,200 flashlamp units. The reliability of such units is studied. The probability that none of the units will fail if they are to undergo a certain number of shots (say 50, 100 or 200) provided that all these units have been tested for a given number of shots is estimated. The data used to develop the method are given. Suitable models for the failure rate of an individual unit are considered, and the parameters for these models are computed. The best model is selected and relia… more

Reliability and operating experience of the LAMPF 805-MHz rf system

Description: Over 850,000 hours have been accumulated on the klystrons and modulators that constitute the LAMPF 805-MHz rf system. The 1-1/4 MW klystrons, the floating-deck modulators, and the modulator triodes are described. The operating data are summarized, and the fault and failure modes are tabulated for the three major components of the system. The high-voltage processing and other maintenance required to keep this 86-kV system operating reliably are described. The tube failure rates, tube fault rates… more

Application of longitudinal magnification effect to magnification stereoscopic angiography. A new method of cerebral angiography

Description: A new method of stereoscopic cerebral angiography was developed which employs 2X radiographic magnification. In order to obtain the same depth perception in the object as with conventional contact stereoscopic angiography, one can make the x-ray exposures at two focal spot positions which are separated by only 1 inch, whereas the contact technique requires a separation of 4 inches. The smaller distance is possible because, with 2X magnification, the transverse detail in the object is magnified … more

Determination of x-ray spectra incident on and transmitted through whole excised breast for improved mammographic exposing technique

Description: Measurements were made of x-ray spectra incident on and transmitted through whole excised fresh breast tissue. The spectra and corresponding radiographs show that hardening of the x-ray beam from a molybdenum anode x-ray tube by a 0.5 mm Al filter instead of the conventional 0.03 mm Mo filter allows shorter exposure times and reduces patient radiation exposure. With the Al filter, acceptable image contrast is preserved in mammography of thick or dense breasts.

Performance studies of prototype microchannel plate photomultipliers

Description: The characteristics of prototype photomultipliers having high gain microchannel plates for electron multiplication have been investigated. Measurements are given of the dark current, quantum efficiency, anode pulse amplitude, electron transit time, single photoelectron time spread, and pulse height resolution of LEP HR 350 and HR 400 photomultipliers. The gain, the collection efficiency, and the single electron pulse amplitude as functions of the ambient axial and transverse magnetic fields hav… more

Application of high rate magnetron sputtering to the fabrication of A-15 compounds

Description: High quality Nb/sub 3/Sn films have been fabricated using a recently developed magnetron sputtering process capable of deposition rates approaching 1 ..mu..m/min. at sputtering voltages less than 500 V and power levels of about 5 KW. Low sputtering voltages allow more complete thermalization at lower pressures of the material condensing on the substrate which can improve long range order. Transition temperatures of up to 18.3/sup 0/K, J/sub c/(O)'s of 15 x 10/sup 6/ A/cm/sup 2/ and Hc/sub 2/ as… more

New electonic gain device for high-temperature applications. [Integrated thermionic circuit for instrumentation for geothermal application, shale oil retorting, and underground gasification of coal]

Description: This report deals with a new integrated thermionic device capable of withstanding ambient temperatures in excess of 500/sup 0/C, which eliminates the problems associated with earlier versions. The history of the ITC (Integrated Thermionic Circuit) is traced along with Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) interests for geothermal instrumentation. The evolution of the new structure is discussed and a set of practical device design and performance equations are demonstrated.

Relativistic particle beam in a semi-infinite, axially symmetric conducting channel extending from a perfectly conducting plane

Description: The electromagnetic field configuration generated if there is no wall surrounding the channel is investigated. An azimuthally symmetric channel of given uniform, finite, conductivity and radius is treated. It is shown that if Q is the total charge in the pulse, then the total charge that passes through any plane z > 0 is exactly equal to Q and that as the pulse moves through the channel and the distance from the ground plane to the pulse approaches infinity, the electromagnetic field configurat… more

Space charge equation calculations for the reflex triode

Description: The Poisson equation solution of the space charge problem for the reflex triode is reviewed and illustrated with a number of examples. The numerical calculation technique for obtaining these results is briefly described. The results show that the characteristics of the triode are strong functions of the reflex-electron kinetic-energy spectrum, especially of the high-energy electrons.

Relativistic diodes in crossed magnetic fields. Progress report, June 1, 1975--February 15, 1976

Description: The behavior of a cylindrical field emission diode (radial potential approximately 200 kV) was studied in the presence of an externally applied axial magnetic field B less than or equal to 16 kG. Observations made of the space charge-limited electron current (approximately 50 kA) compare favorably with theory which takes into account the presence of both the external axial magnetic field and the azimuthal self-magnetic field generated by current flow in the cathode. At magnetic fields exceeding… more

NEGATIVE HYDROGEN-ION PROGRAM AT FERMILAB

Description: Direct extraction from an ion source of the magnetron design is being studied for the production of 50 to 100 milliamperes of negative hydrogen ions that can be accelerated through the 750-kV column at Fermilab. After acceleration through the linac to 200 MeV, the ions will be injected into the booster and converted to protons by a foil stripper. The booster will be filled to high intensity by injecting many turns directly into a common orbit.
