SDG and E - ERDA Geothermal Loop Experimental Facility. Bi-monthly report, May 1975-August 1976

Description: A description of the Geothermal Loop Experimental Facility (GLEF) its construction problems, and a discussion of start-up testing are included. A history and description of the operation and maintenance with the brine injection pump for the facility are presented. The GLEF was divided into five separate sections: steam and condensate system, brine system, purge water system, vent gas system, and cooling water system. An insight into the chemistry of each system is provided by analysis of sample… more

Thermodynamic model of the hydrolysis of microcline in acid-sulfate solutions

Description: A theoretical model of the hydrolysis of microcline by a hydrothermal solution has been determined for a closed system at constant temperature. Hypothetical solution compositions and temperatures were chosen to match the known geothermal system at Roosevelt Hot Springs, Utah. The calculated reaction paths indicate that the overall reaction process is an exchange of potassium from the reactant mineral, microcline, for hydrogen from the solution. Aluminum is nearly conserved among solid phases. T… more

Plant Research '76

Description: Overall objective remains unchanged: to contribute to the knowledge, with strong emphasis on fundamental problems, of how plants function, the roles they play in the environment and energy relations of the world, and how these roles may be optimized for the benefit of mankind. (PCS)

Petrology and Stable Isotope Geochemistry of Three Wells in the Buttes Area of the Salton Sea Geothermal Field, Imperial Valley, California, Usa

Description: A detailed investigation is reported of cuttings recovered from three wells in the Salton Sea geothermal field located at the southeast end of the Salton Sea, California. The wells, Magmamax No. 2, Magmamax No. 3, and Woolsey No. 1 penetrate 1340 m, 1200 m, and 730 m, respectively, of altered sandstones, siltstones, and shales of the Colorado River delta. The wells are located at the crest of a thermal anomaly, reach a maximum of 320/sup 0/C at 1070 m, and produce a brine containing approximate… more

Partitioning of actinide elements from high-level waste using laser photochemical methods

Description: The feasibility of photochemically fractionating the actinides in nuclear waste processing has been evaluated on a preliminary basis. The data indicate that there are potentially useful photo-redox reactions. However, there is a serious lack of data on photochemical parameters for the solutions conditions which exist in nuclear waste processing. The problem areas relevant to photochemical processing are identified. The experimental areas which must be investigated in order to further evaluate t… more

Nuclear chemistry research. Progress report, November 1, 1975--October 31, 1976. [Summary of research activities at the University of Chicago]

Description: Experiments in progress to study the dependence of cross section and gross recoil properties of various radioactive products from light (Al), medium-mass (Cu, Ag) and heavy (Bi, U) target nuclei bombarded with high-energy protons (1-400 GeV) are nearing completion. Emphasis is now being given to the details of the production processes, such as the angular and energy distributions of the products and their relation to fundamental particle interactions. Experiments are also underway on the compar… more

Simultaneous reactions at disk and porous electrodes

Description: Advances in electrochemical engineering are reviewed and the methodology of analysis of electrochemical systems outlined. Examples illustrative of current research concern simultaneous reactions for flow-through porous electrodes and the more fundamental system of a rotating-disk electrode. Here the undesirable side reaction is the formation of dissolved hydrogen, and the main reaction is the deposition of copper from sulfuric acid solutions. Distributions of reaction rate, concentration, and p… more

Environmental status of the Lake Michigan region. Volume 3. Chemistry of Lake Michigan

Description: The report is a synoptic review of data collected over the past twenty years on the chemistry of Lake Michigan. Changes in water quality and sediment chemistry, attributable to cultural and natural influences, are considered in relation to interacting processes and factors controlling the distribution and concentration of chemical substances within the Lake. Temperature, light, and mixing processes are among the important natural influences that affect nutrient cycling, dispersal of pollutants,… more

Surface chemistry of selected lunar regions. [Th, K, Fe, Mg, and Ti]

Description: A completely new analysis has been carried out on the data from the Apollo 15 and 16 ..gamma.. ray spectrometer experiments. The components of the continuum background have been estimated. The elements Th, K, Fe and Mg give useful results; results for Ti are significant only for a few high Ti regions. Errors are given, and the results are checked by other methods. Concentrations are reported for about sixty lunar regions; the ground track has been subdivided in various ways. The borders of the … more
