CARBON AND DEUTERIUM NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE IN SOLIDS

Description: In Chapter I we present the results on a study of cross polarization dynamics, between protons and carbon-13 in adamantane, by the direct observation of the dilute, carbon-13, spins. These dynamics are an important consideration in the efficiency of proton enhancement double-resonance techniques and they also provide good experimental models for statistical theories of cross relaxation. In order to test these theories we present a comparison of the experimental and theoretical proton dipolar fl… more

Properties of unirradiated fuel element graphites H-451 and SO818. [Bulk density, tensile properties, thermal expansion, thermal conductivity]

Description: Nuclear graphites H-451, lot 440 (Great Lakes Carbon Corporation (GLCC)), and SO818 (Airco Speer Division, Air Reduction Corporation (AS)) are described, and physical, mechanical, and chemical property data are presented for the graphites in the unirradiated state. A summary of the mean values of the property data and of data on TS-1240 and H-451, lot 426, is tabulated. A direct comparison of H-451, lot 426, chosen for Fort St. Vrain (FSV) fuel reload production, TS-1240, and SO818 may be made … more

Linear triangle finite element formulation for multigroup neutron transport analysis with anisotropic scattering

Description: The discrete ordinates method is the most powerful and generally used deterministic method to obtain approximate solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation. A finite element formulation, utilizing a canonical form of the transport equation, is here developed to obtain both integral and pointwise solutions to neutron transport problems. The formulation is based on the use of linear triangles. A general treatment of anisotropic scattering is included by employing discrete ordinates-like approx… more

Orientation and alignment in beam tilted-foil spectroscopy. [Stokes parameters]

Description: The production of atomic orientation and alignment, by anisotropic excitation is analyzed. The stokes parameters of the light emitted from tilted-foil excited ions provide measurements of orientation and alignment, and some examples are given. The variations of the stokes parameters with foil tilt angle, excited state, ion velocity and foil material are compared with existing theories.

Molecular effects in inner-shell photoabsorption shape resonances and EXAFS. [Multiple scattering model]

Description: With few exceptions, inner-shell photoabsorption spectra of molecules exhibit strong shape resonances near threshold, weak fine structure extending far into the continuum, or both. The main characteristics of these one-electron effects are established by reviewing selected experimental data. Then recent calculations are described based on the multiple-scattering model which show in detail how these effects are caused by the anisotropic molecular field, which mixes high-l partial-wave components… more

Monte Carlo model for a thick target T(D,n)/sup 4/ He neutron source

Description: A brief description is given of a calculational model developed to simulate a T(D,n)/sup 4/ He neutron source which is anisotropic in energy and intensity. The model also provides a means for including the time dependency of the neutron source. Although the model has been applied specifically to the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory ICT accelerator, the technique is general and can be applied to any similar neutron source.

Anisotropic ultrasound propagation in a smectic-C liquid crystal. [Multidomain model]

Description: The results of longitudinal ultrasound propagation in a magnetically aligned smectic-C liquid crystal (p-p' Heptyloxyazoxy benzene) are reported. In the smectic-C phase the plane normals can lie anywhere on a cone with the axis along the magnetic field direction in which the sample was cooled. The effects of the layer normal direction and the molecular orientation within the planes on the velocity anisotropy were separated by cooling the sample into the smectic-C phase at particular orientation… more

Magnetostriction of rare earth-Fe/sub 2/ laves phase compounds

Description: Single crystal magnetostriction measurements were made as a function of temperature on TbFe/sub 2/ and DyFe/sub 2/. From these, the intrinsic magnetoelastic coupling coefficients were determined for the rare earth-Fe/sub 2/ compounds. Employing x-ray techniques, certain multicomponent rare earth-Fe/sub 2/ compounds were identified to maximize the magnetostriction to anisotropy ratio.
