Economic impact of corrosion and scaling problems in geothermal energy systems

Description: Corrosion and scaling problems have a significant impact on geothermal plant economics. A power plant must amortize the capital investment over a 20-year period and achieve satisfactory operating efficiency to achieve financial success. Corrosion and scale incrustations have been encountered in all geothermal plants, and to various degrees, adversely affected plant life times and power output. Using published data this report analyzes known geothermal corrosion and scaling phenomena for signifi… more

Polarizability of the low frequency excitations in disordered solids. [Polymethylmethacrylate]

Description: An attempt to find manifestations of an electric dipole moment associated with the low-temperature thermal properties of glasses has enabled the setting of very low limits for GeO/sub 2/ and PMMA, 0.06 and 0.16 Debye respectively. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the electric field dependence of the thermal conductivity of SiO/sub 2/ in conjunction with dielectric measurements by Schickfus et al. has pinned down some of the features of a tunneling system… more

Advanced waste forms research and development. First quarterly report

Description: Activities during the last two months are described. A significant portion of time was spent reviewing the literature on the Cs/sub 2/O-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-SiO/sub 2/ system, on the use of clays and zeolites for Cs-fixation of aqueous wastes, and on silicate-phosphate apatite structure crystal chemistry. The results from the latest group of compatibility studies (CS-runs) were used to modify the first demonstration supercalcine formulation so that it is more in line with the actual crystalline ph… more

Temperature dependence of the fir absorption spectrum in amorphous dielectrics. [GeO/sub 2/ PMMA, vitreous SiO/sub 2/ with and without 600 ppM H/sub 2/O]

Description: A study of the temperature dependence of the absorption coefficient in amorphous dielectrics below 10 cm/sup -1/ enabled the identification of energy level configurations from thermal population changes. It was found that the anomalous low frequency modes in glasses are comprised of widely spaced manifolds of energy levels.

Brine chemistry: scaling and corrosion. Geothermal research study in the Salton Sea region of California

Description: The purpose of this report is to recommend a reasonable program of brine chemistry research that will result in the development of methods for predicting and controlling scale deposition, and in guidelines for the selection of corrosion-resistant construction materials. First, background information, which is necessary for the understanding of the problems of scaling and corrosion in the Salton Sea KGRA, is presented through a review of the history of geothermal exploration and development in t… more

X-ray line spectra from DT filled SiO/sub 2/ microshells

Description: This paper is a discussion of curved crystal x-ray spectrometry of laser induced plasmas for h..nu.. < 4 keV. The plasmas were produced by a short pulse (<200 ps) of 1.06 ..mu.. (neodymium glass) radiation on glass shells on the order of a hundred ..mu..m in diameter and a micron thick. Total absorbed laser energy is of the order of 10 joules and x-radiation .01-.1 joule/sr. The shells were filled with DT gas under compression.

Chemical studies on SYNTHOIL process. Quarterly report, September 1--November 30, 1975

Description: This is the first quarterly report of a two year program of a study in support of the Pittsburgh Energy Research Center's SYNTHOIL process for coal liquefaction. The overall program consists of three tasks: Task 1, ''Catalyst Improvement'' in which the mechanisms of catalyst deactivation and methods of reactivation will be explored; Task 2, ''Ash Effects'' in which the effect of the mineral content of coals on liquefaction will be assessed in autoclave experimens; and Task 3, ''Kinetic Studies'… more
