Study of geothermal prospects in the western United States

Description: The commercial development potential of 13 underdeveloped geothermal prospects in the western United States has been examined and the prospects have been ranked in order of relative potential for development on the basis of investment considerations. The following were considered in the ranking: geotechnical and engineering data, energy market accessibility, administrative constraints, and environmental and socio-economic factors. The primary ranking criterion is the unit cost of energy product… more

Mineral cycling in southeastern ecosystems. Proceedings of a symposium held at Augusta, Georgia May 1--3, 1974

Description: Sixty-six papers were presented on cycling of natural and man-made elements, including terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments, as well as current ideas on modeling. Principles governing elemental flow included radiocesium in natural environments, especially in the southeastern United States. Individual entries were made for 47 items.

Solid earth geosciences research activities at LASL. Progress report, January 1--June 30, 1975

Description: The geoscience group at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) supports existing geoscience-related programs and conducts a basic research program related to energy and earth resources. Projects supporting the dry hot-rock geothermal energy program include study of drill cores, seismic activity associated with hydraulic fracturing at the drill site, and the thermal state of the Valles Caldera. Research in igneous processes includes the modeling of large-scale volcanic eruptions such as the… more

Brine chemistry: scaling and corrosion. Geothermal research study in the Salton Sea region of California

Description: The purpose of this report is to recommend a reasonable program of brine chemistry research that will result in the development of methods for predicting and controlling scale deposition, and in guidelines for the selection of corrosion-resistant construction materials. First, background information, which is necessary for the understanding of the problems of scaling and corrosion in the Salton Sea KGRA, is presented through a review of the history of geothermal exploration and development in t… more

Seabed disposal program: geochemical and sedimentological studies of North Pacific sediments. Progress report, July 1, 1975--September 30, 1975

Description: Reduction of field data for study area MPG-2 (33/sup 0/20'N, 151/sup 0/ 00'W) has established that sedimentation rates during the past 20 million years have varied by less than a factor of two over distances of tens of kilometers. These variations have been uniform through time, indicating that catastrophic events have not disturbed sediments in this area. Manganese nodules from the MPG-2 area are not economically attractive. Geochemical baseline data, Youngs Bay, Oregon, 1974

Description: This report comprises one part of a final report to the Alumax Pacific Aluminum Corporation on the Physical, Chemical and Biological Studies of Youngs Bay''. The data reported herein are the product of the geochemical baseline section of the project. The primary objectives of the geochemical study were: to provide a baseline record of fluoride and selected trace metal levels in Youngs Bay bottom sediment, to identify areas that might function as heavy metal traps, to attempt to determine the re… more
