HEAT TRANSFER FROM SPENT REACTOR FUELS DURING SHIPPING: A PROPOSED METHOD FOR PREDICTING TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION IN FUEL BUNDLES AND COMPARISON WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA

Description: A simple method is developed for calculating or predicting temperature distributions in spent reactor fuels in shipping casks. The method accounts for radiant heat transfer between all the individual pins in a square array. With the dimensions of the fuel bundle, the configuration factors for radiation between various tubes in the bundle can be obtained from the tabulated numerical calculations presented. The configuration factors, along with the heat generation rates, surface emissivity, and t… more

NUCLEAR AEROSPACE SAFETY PROBLEMS

Description: Safety problems that have arisen in the conquest of space and are of a nuclear origin are discussed. Space radiation such as cosmic radiation, geomagnetically trapped corpuscular radiation, and solar flare radiation and radiations inherent in nuclear auxilliary power systems are considered. Problems created by the use of nuclear propulsion systems are emphasized. Launch pad problems and core disposal are discussed (M.C.G.)

The Structure of Heavy Nuclei: A Study of Very Weak Alpha Branching

Description: Very weak alpha branching in heavy elements was studied by a recently developed coincidence technique. This technique makes it possible to measure the energies and intensities of both alpha -particle groups and de-exciting radiation, even when the transition intensities are as low as 10/sup -8/ relative to the most intense alpha group. Twenty alpha -particle emitters from Po/sup 214/ to Fm were examined. 00+ states (beta vibrations) were observed in six even-even nuclei, and analogous states we… more

CHARACTERISTICS OF A THERMIONIC CONVERTER WITH A HIGH-TEMPERATURE COLLECTOR

Description: Current-voltage characteristics of a cesium-on-tantalum thermionic converter with a collector temperature comparable to that of the emitter were obtained for a variety of electrode temperatures and cesium vapor pressures. The results show that for emitter temperatures in excess of 2000 deg K, power outputs of a few watts per square centimeter can be obtained when the ratio of collector temperature to emitter temperature is as high as 0.75 to 0.80, which is the required range for best performanc… more

Radiation Resistance Tests

Description: The complex response of polymers to radiation necessitates knowledge of the radiation resistance and of the effects of radiation type, energy, and intensity on the resistance. A brief discussion is given of the types of radiation and their interactions with materials, and the techniques for measuring the amount of energy absorbed in a material from the radiation field are surveyed. Present-day knowledge of how various parameters and properties of the specimen affect its response to radiation is… more

Strange-Particle Production by 1170-MeV/c pi- Mesons

Description: Production of {Lambda} + K{sup 0}, {Sigma}{sup 0} + K{sup 0}, and {Sigma}{sup -} + K{sup +} by 1170-MeV/c {pi}{sup -} mesons has been studied in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 72-inch hydrogen bubble chamber, Cross sections, angular distributions, and polarizations are presented. The polarization of the {Sigma}{sup 0} is determined at four center-of-mass angles and found to be small everywhere. Based on published results for the reaction {pi}{sup +} + p {yields} {Sigma}{sup +}, K{sup +}, a c… more

THE EFFECT OF A MINIMUM WEIGHT RADIAL REFLECTOR ON SNAP SHIELDING REQUIREMENTS

Description: A model was derived for a minimum-weight radial reflector for SNAP reactors. The effect, which the use of this optimal reflector has on radiation shield weight requirements is investigated. Weights of systems employing conventional and optimal radial reflectors are compared using the FARSE and FARSER computer codes. It is found that for the configuration under study additional shield weight required when the optimal reflector is used is in excess of the reflector weight savings. (auth)

An Annotated Bibliography on the Effects of Radiation on Heterogeneously Catalyzed Reactions and on Chemisorption

Description: The 264 references were compiled primarily from a search of Chemical Abstracts, Nuclear Science Abstracts, and Dissertation Abstracts through December 1962. The annotations give the type of radiation, the catalysts investigated, and the test reactions used. The entries are cross-referenced, and indexes of the authors, catalysts, reactions, and type of radiation are provided. The compliation is limited to papers in which either heterogeneously catalyzed reactions, chemisorption, or the radiolysi… more

Description: Data are summarized on incidents that have been sustained by the AEC in the transport of radioactive materials from 1957 through 1981. In the period covered by this report there were 47 incidents reported. Twenty-nine did not result in the release of radioactive materials. Of the remaining 18 cases there was none that involved any serious radiological consequences or involved costly cleanup. Six of the incidents involved onsite movements of materials. The incidents are classified in accordance … more
