Accidental nuclear excursion recuplex operation 234-5 facility: Final medical report

Description: The April 7, 1962 criticality accident involving human exposures was the first to have occurred in any production facility at Hanford. The accidental nuclear excursion did not result in any mechanical damage or spread of contamination. Three employees received over-exposure to gamma and neutron radiation. None were fatally exposed and in each case the over-exposure was recognized promptly. Following an initial period of medical observation and testing, the men were released to work. They contin… more

SOME OBSERVATIONS REGARDING RARE-EARTH LACTATES

Description: Lactates of all the rare earths except lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium were prepared and studied. In the case of lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium the laciates are apparently so soluble that they cannot be crystallized directly from aqueous solution. Products obtained by addition of anhydrous ethanol to sirupy solutions of the iight-rare-earth lactates were not well characterized and were deliquescent. Neodymium lactate trinydrate was prepared only by the addition of alcohol to a sirupy s… more

FORMATION OF HYDRAZOIC ACID FROM HYDRAZINE IN NITRIC ACID SOLUTIONS

Description: S>A study was made of the kinetics and stoichiometry of the formation of hydrazoic acid in nitric acid solutions containing hydrazine and ferrous sulfamate. The data were used to establish safe limits for the use of hydrazine in process solutions. (auth)

Recovery of Strontium and Rare Earths From Purex Wastes by Solvent Extraction

Description: A solvent extraction flowsheet was developed for recovery of strontium- 90 and mixed rare-earth fission products from adjusted Purex 1WW waste solution by di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in Amsco l25-82 modified with tributyl phosphate (TBP). First cycle feed is prepared by adding tartrate and caustic to the waste solution to complex the iron and adjust the pH. Strontium and rare earths are coextracted with D2EHPA-TBP-Amsco and stripped with nitric acid in the first cycle, and then iso… more
