Syllabus of Clay Testing: Part 1

Description: From Introduction: "This presentation (pt. 1) is what might be termed a qualitative syllabus, in that uses only are indicated, no attempt being made to evaluate a clay quantitatively, that is, to grade for particular uses. In part 2, which is to follow, the work will be amplified both qualitatively and quantitatively. In the first, preliminary tests are made to eliminate from consideration all nonclay minerals or clay minerals containing such large amounts of impurities as to render them unfit … more

Torsion tests of 24S-T aluminum-alloy noncircular bar and tubing

Description: From Summary: "Tests of 24S-T aluminum alloy have been made to determine the yield and ultimate strengths in torsion of noncircular bar and tubing. An approximate basis for predicting these torsional strength characteristics has been indicated. The results show that the torsional stiffness and maximum shearing stresses within the elastic range may be computed quite closely by means of existing formulas based on mathematical analysis and the membrane analogy."

NACA Radio Ground-Speed System for Aircraft, Special Report

Description: "A method that utilizes the Doppler effect on radio signals for determining the speed of an airplane and the distance traveled by the airplane has been developed and found to operate satisfactorily. In this method, called the NACA radio ground-speed system, standard readily available radio equipment is used almost exclusively and extreme frequency stability of the transmitters is not necessary. No complicated equipment need be carried in the airplane, as the standard radio transmitter is usuall… more

Progress Report on Fatigue of Spot-Welded Aluminum

Description: Report presenting a detailed account of approximately half of the work planned for a specified contract. The work called for fatigue tests on three simple but basic types of spot-welded test pieces made from 24S-T alclad. The primary purpose of the investigation was determining the mechanism of fatigue failures in the different types of test pieces.

Effects of Prior Fatigue-Stressing of the Impact Resistance of Chromium-Molybdenum Aircraft Steel

Description: Note presenting a study of the impact behavior of normalized SAE X4130 steel after a variety of repeated stress treatments. Fatigue specimens of several types were used and the effects of surface finish, rest periods, stress amplitude, mean stress, stress concentration, and temperature during repeated stress received consideration.

Circumventing chloride ion trouble Columbia River water

Description: This report contains data acquired during sampling of the Columbia River water on March 26, 1945. Topics of discussion include; the elevation of chlorine levels from 4 ppm to 20 ppm, what steps should be taken to remediate the problem, and the various processes that were taken into consideration for the clean up of this chlorine. Separation processes considered include; ion exchange, distillation, precipitation, heat exchange, and recirculation through a cooling tower.

Jet-boundary corrections for reflection-plane models in rectangular wind tunnels

Description: A detailed method for determining the jet-boundary corrections for reflection-plane models in rectangular wind tunnels is presented. The method includes the determination of the tunnel span local distribution and the derivation of equations for the corrections to the angle of attack, the lift and drag coefficients, and the pitching-, rolling-, yawing-, and hinge-moment coefficients. The principle effects of aerodynamic induction and of the boundary-induced curvature of the streamlines have been… more

Shear Tests on DuPont Explosive Rivets With the Countersunk Head Milled Flush After Expansion

Description: Report discusses the results of shear testing in which the heads of Du Pont explosive countersunk rivets were allowed to protrude above the skin surface before expansion and the protruding portions were removed after expansion. As the height of the rivet head above the skin increases, the tightness of the rivet was found to increase. The report concludes that it may be desirable to investigating filling an entire shank with an explosive charge in order to permit greater tolerances in the drille… more

Bearing tests of magnesium-alloy sheet

Description: From Summary: "Bearing tests of AM-3S, AM-52S, and AM-C57S magnesium-alloy sheet in various thicknesses and tempers were made. Bearing yield and ultimate strengths were determined and compared for various edge distances and for various ratios of loading-pin diameter to sheet thickness.
