Icing-Protection Requirements for Reciprocating-Engine Induction Systems

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the icing of aircraft-engine induction systems. Criterions for safe operation and for the design of new induction system are established through the investigation. The results were obtained from laboratory investigations of carburetor-supercharger combinations, wind-tunnel investigations of air scoops, multicylinder-engine studies, and flight investigations.

Determination of plate compressive strengths at elevated temperatures

Some Effects of Nonlinear Variation in the Directional-Stability and Damping-in-Yawing Derivatives on the Lateral Stability of an Airplane

Experimental investigation of the effect of vertical-tail size and length and of fuselage shape and length on the static lateral stability characteristics of a model with 45 degree sweptback wing and tail surfaces

Description: An investigation was made to determine the effects of vertical-tail size and length and of fuselage shape and length on the static lateral stability characteristics of a model with wing and vertical tails having the quarter-chord lines swept back 45 degrees. The results indicate that the directional instability of the various isolated fuselages was about two-thirds as large as that predicted by classical theory.

Some Features of Artificially Thickened Fully Developed Turbulent Boundary Layers with Zero Pressure Gradient

Description: Report gives an account of an investigation conducted to determine the feasibility of artificially thickening a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate. A description is given of several methods used to thicken artificially the boundary layer. It is shown that it is possible to do substantial thickening and obtain a fully developed turbulent boundary layer, which is free from any distortions introduced by the thickening process, and, as such, is a suitable medium for fundamental research.

Two-and Three-Dimensional Unsteady Lift Problems in High-Speed Flight

Description: "The problem of transient lift on two- and three-dimensional wings flying at high speeds is discussed as a boundary-value problem for the classical wave equation. Kirchoff's formula is applied so that the analysis is reduced, just as in the steady state, to an investigation of sources and doublets.
