Calibrations of Service Pitot Tubes in the Langley 24-Inch High-Speed Tunnel

Description: Report discusses calibration testing performed on a Kollsman type G-1 and an NAF No. 1 pitot tube at several Mach numbers and angles of attack. The effect of drain holes on the flow within the pitot tube was analyzed and the ability to estimate the error in the total pressure was created. The accuracy of the extrapolated and estimated values were found to be within reasonable limits.

Wind-Tunnel Tests of the 0.15-Scale Powered Model of the Fleetwings XBTK-1 Airplane: Longitudinal Stability and Control

Description: "An investigation was made of the static longitudinal stability, and control and stall characteristics of XBTK-1 dive bomber. Results indicate that the longitudinal stability will probably be satisfactory for all contemplated flight conditions at the rear-most CG location with elevator both fixed and free. Power effects were small. Sufficient elevator control will be available to trim in any flight condition above the ground" (p. 1).

Flight Tests of Various Tail Modifications on the Brewster XSBA-1 Airplane 2: Measurements of Flying Qualities with Tail Configuration Number Two

Description: Several tail modifications of the Brewster XSBA-1 scout-bomber were investigated and results compared. Modifications consisted of variation of the chord of the elevator and rudder while the total area of the surfaces is kept constant and variations of the total area of the vertical tail surface. Configuration number 2 reduced trim changes by 50 percent and reduced average elevator control force gradient from 30 to 27 pounds/g. Stick travel required to stall in maneuver was 4.6 inches.

Tests of a 1/17-scale model of the XBDR-1 airplane in the NACA gust tunnel

Description: Report presenting tests in the gust tunnel on a scale model of the XBDR-1 airplane to verify the calculated effective gust factor. Tests were made for three gust shapes, one forward velocity, and one wing loading. The test results and analysis were in good agreement and the results of the analysis indicated that there was an appreciable change in effective gust factor for the center-of-gravity movement considered.

Spray Characteristics and Take-Off and Landing Stability of Several Modifications of a 1/8-Size Model of the PBN-1 Flying Boat - NACA Model 192

Analysis of V-G Records from the SNB-1 Airplane

Description: Availability data obtained on SNB-1 trainer-class airplanes were analyzed and results presented as flight envelopes which predict occurrences of large values of air speed and acceleration. Ditching Tests of a 1/8-Scale Model of the Navy SB2c-1 Airplane (Army A-25) in Langley Tank Number 2 and on an Outdoor Catapult

Description: Report presenting testing to determine the best way to land the SB2C-1 airplane in calm and rough water and to determine its probable ditching performance. The behavior of the model was determined by making visual observations and by recording the maximum longitudinal decelerations and by taking motion pictures of the ditchings. Results regarding the effect of flaps, attitude, weight, a wing-low landing, effect of simulated damage, effect of tail wheel, ditching aids, and seaway are provided.

An Investigation of the Ranger V-770-8 Engine Installation for the Edo XOSE-1 Airplane 2: Aerodynamics

Description: Investigations were made to determine the cowling and cooling characteristics of the Ranger V-770-8 engine installation in an observation seaplane. Final cowl configurations possessed ample engine and oil-cooler pressure drops for cooling in the critical normal-power climb condition with any of the three baffle configurations tested. The indicated critical Mach number of the cowling was found to be 0.70 as determined by the pressure on the lower lip of the inlet.
