Charging-circuit study for copper-vapor lasers. Final report, 29 June 1981-30 November 1981

Description: This study is divided into three tasks whose combined purpose is to evaluate methods of charging high PRF pulsed power subsystems required in a proposed laser isotope separation (LIS) plant. The work performed in this program follows directly from designs and experiments carried out in a recently-completed study and, in fact, utilizes much of the same apparatus described previously. The first task required the preparation and vugraph presentation of a review of eight potential charging methods.… more

Recovery of uranium-233 from a thorium breeding blanket by pyrochemical techniques

Description: We have carefully evaluated several processes that might be suitable for uranium recovery from thorium metal, and have chosen two that hold great promise. Both are simple non-aqueous methods that can readily be performed by remote means, and both require only a few simple process steps.

Photometric on-line monitor for total oxidants in the ports purge cascade

Description: A proposed scheme for the continuous, on-line monitoring of the total concentration of oxidizing (fluorinating) gases in the top purge section of a gaseous diffusion cascade was evaluated using simulated process conditions in a laboratory. The scheme involves the reaction of the oxidizing gases in a sample stream with sodium chloride to produce chlorine, which is then measured with an ultraviolet photometer to yield a value for total oxidant concentration. This report describes the experimental… more

Effect of nuclear spin on chemical reactions and internal molecular rotation

Description: Part I of this dissertation is a study of the magnetic isotope effect, and results are presented for the separation of /sup 13/C and /sup 12/C isotopes. Two models are included in the theoretical treatment of the effect. In the first model the spin states evolve quantum mechanically, and geminate recombination is calculated by numerically integrating the collision probability times the probability the radical pair is in a singlet state. In the second model the intersystem crossing is treated vi… more

Cooling tower drift studies at the Paducah, Kentucky Gaseous Diffusion Plant

Description: The transfer and fate of chromium from cooling tower drift to terrestrial ecosystems were quantified with concentrations in plant materials (fescue grass) decreasing with increasing distance from the cooling tower. Results indicate that elemental content in drift water (mineral residue) may not be equivalent to the content in the recirculating cooling water of the tower. This hypothesis is contrary to basic assumptions in calculating drift emissions. Results suggest that differences in retentio… more

Advanced Hydride Laboratory

Description: The Replacement Tritium Facility (RTF) is a $140 million reservoir loading and unloading facility using state-of-the-art technology, scheduled for completion in 1990 and startup in 1991. In the RTF, metal hydride technology will be used to store, separate, purify, pump, and compress hydrogen isotopes. In support of the RTF, a $3.2 million ``cold`` process demonstration facility began operation in November, 1987. The purpose of the Advanced Hydride Laboratory (AHL) is to demonstrate the RFT`s me… more

Advanced Hydride Laboratory

Description: Metal hydrides have been used at the Savannah River Tritium Facilities since 1984. However, the most extensive application of metal hydride technology at the Savannah River Site is being planned for the Replacement Tritium Facility, a $140 million facility schedules for completion in 1990 and startup in 1991. In the new facility, metal hydride technology will be used to store, separate, isotopically purify, pump, and compress hydrogen isotopes. In support of the Replacement Tritium Facility, a … more

Advanced Processing Technology semiannual report, March--December 1991. Volume 1, Number 1

Description: This first issue of the APT Semiannual Report focuses on APT`s defense-related technologies. These technologies are a continuation of the research, development, and engineering work performed by LLNLs Special Isotope Separation (SIS) Program. SIS was the first large-scale DOE venture that had environmentally conscious manufacturing processes and facilities as its deliverables. The objectives were to create a facility where the only outputs were either usable products or disposable wastes, and t… more

Proceedings of the workshop on the production and use of intense radioactive beams at the Isospin Laboratory

Description: These proceedings report the deliberations of a 3 1/2 day workshop on the Production and Use of Intense Radioactive Ion Beams at the Isospin Laboratory, which was held at the Joint Institute for Heavy Ion Research in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, October 1992. The purpose of this workshop was not to duplicate the programs of other recent radioactive ion beam workshops or international conferences that have focused on the scientific concepts which radioactive beams can, and in fact already are, addressi… more

Rare gas monohalide discharge studies. Final report

Description: Results of the first phase of an experimental investigation of the minimum e-beam current density requirements for repetitively pulsed XeF lasers with 10 to 100-mJ pulse energy are presented. Measurements were made in the self-sustained and e-beam preionized mode of operation. The e-beam preionized experimental results were similar to those obtained with uv preionization at other laboratories, indicating that ionization phenomena (rather than photodissociation) are dominant in both experiments.… more

Tritium Waste Control Project progress report: April--June 1976. [LIS; electrolysis; monitor; shipping container; catalytic exchange]

Description: Tritiated Liquid Waste Decontamination (Molecular Excitation): A preliminary economic study of water detritiation by laser isotope separation indicates possible advantages over the catalytic exchange process. The electric power requirements are a factor of 5 lower, resulting in a 50-percent reduction in operating costs. Capital costs for the two methods appear comparable. Additional attempts were made to determine the ir spectrum of HTO around the ..nu../sub 1/ band. However, carbon dioxide imp… more

Tunable lasers in isotope separation, a colorful view of a dye chemist

Description: Some of the problems to be encountered in the large-scale use of dye lasers in an isotope separation plant are discussed. Why should dye lasers be employed. How can dye conversion efficiency be optimized. How can dye photochemical decomposition and hence running costs be minimized and how serious is this effect anyway. What are toxicity problems with the dye. These and similar issues are examined.

This semi-continuous gas chromatographic separation process will be used in new tritium facilities at the Savannah River Site. A tritium production unit is scheduled to start operation in 1993. An experimental, large-scale unit is currently being tested using protium and deuterium. Operation of the large-scale unit has demonstrated separation of mixed hydrogen isotopes … more

Process for strontium-82 separation

Description: The process is for the selective separation of Sr-82 and Sr-85 from a proton-irradiated Mo target. It includes dissolving the Mo in H2O2 to form a solution which is then passed through a cationic resin, whereby Mo, Nb, Tc, Se, V, As, Ge, Zr, Rb ions remain in the solution, while Rb, Zn, Be, Co, Fe, Mn, Cr, Sr, Y, Zr ions are adsorbed. The resin is contacted with an acid solution to remove the adsorbed ions, forming a second solution. The second solution is evaporated and the residue dissolved i… more
