Concepts involving the use of natural cold water for cooling commercial and residential buildings have been examined and found to be economically sound and technically feasible. Water Resources Research Program: Pollution of Coastal Waters Off Chicago by Sinking Plumes From the Indiana Harbor Canal

Description: On March 2, 1977, during sinking-plume conditions, a portion of the water of the Indiana Harbor Canal (IHC) was injected with samarium and rhodamine-dye tags and a section of the IHC's surface was covered with simulated oily waste tagged with dysprosium. /sup 137/Cs radioactive dating of Lake Ontario sediment cores

Description: The distribution of /sup 137/Cs in sediment cores from Lake Ontario provides estimates of the sediment accumulation rates. Geochronology with /sup 210/Pb dating and distribution of Ambrosia (ragweed) pollen compare well with /sup 137/Cs dating. These methods can determine with precision, changes in sedimentation occurring over the past 100 years or so. Typical sedimentation rates of 0.18-0.36 cm/yr were measured. 16 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs.
