Brightness and coherence of synchrotron radiation and high-gain free electron lasers

Description: The characteristics of synchrotron radiation are reviewed with particular attention to its phase-space properties and coherence. The transition of the simple undulator radiation to more intense, more coherent high-gain free electron lasers, is discussed.

Optimization of the parameters of a storage ring for a high power XUV free electron laser

Description: In this paper we describe the operation of an XUV high gain FEL operating within a bypass of an electron storage ring, and discuss the implications on storage ring optimization imposed by FEL requirements. It transpires that, in the parameter regime of interest, collective effects within the beam play an important role. For example, intrabeam scattering dilutes the transverse emittance of the beam and the microwave instability increases the momentum spread. Both phenomena reduce the effectivene… more

Summary of the linac based radiation sources working group

Description: Technological advances have occurred in the past few years that have made linac based Free-Electron Lasers (FEL) promising candidates for the generation of short wavelength radiation. Although the FELs use undulators or wigglers, they produce stimulated radiation rather than the spontaneous emission found in insertion devices on the second and third generation sources of today. This stimulated emission process endows the FEL with properties presenting unique opportunities in many fields of scie… more

FEL options for power beaming

Description: The demand for the output power of communication satellites has been increasing exponentially. The satellite power is generated from solar panels which collect the sunlight and convert it to electrical power. The power per satellite is limited due to the limit in the practical size of the solar panel. One way to meet the power demand is to employ multiple satellites (up to 10) per the internationally agreed-upon ``slot`` in the geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO). However, this approach is very ex… more

Undulator interruption in high-gain free electron lasers

Description: The effect of interrupting an undulator on the performance of high-gain free-electron lasers (FELs) is evaluated by analyzing 1-D Maxwell-Vlasov equations. It is found that the effect is small for a reasonable length of the interruptions for FEL parameters envisaged for short wavelength self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE). Since the interruptions provide valuable space for quadrupoles and diagnostics, and at the same time permit a greater flexibility in mechanical design, the result of t… more
