Underground muon observations in the Soudan 2 detector

Description: The Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector has recorded data since Summer 1988 using a quarter (dimensions 4 m by 8 m by 5 m high) of the eventual detector. This iron-argon time projection chamber records extensive data on each event and has excellent angular and multi-track resolution. We describe the trigger, the event analysis procedure and the current status of the detector and the underground muon data sample. 1 ref.

Description of the National Highway Planning Network

Description: The National Highway Planning Network is a data base of major highways in the continental United States. It is a foundation for analytic studies of highway performance, for vehicle routing and scheduling problems, and for mapping purposes. The network is based on a set of roadways digitized from the National Atlas by the US Geological Survey. It has been enhanced at Oak Ridge National Laboratory by adding additional roads and attribute detail and correcting topological errors to produce a true … more

Report of the large solenoid detector group

Description: This report presents a conceptual design of a large solenoid for studying physics at the SSC. The parameters and nature of the detector have been chosen based on present estimates of what is required to allow the study of heavy quarks, supersymmetry, heavy Higgs particles, WW scattering at large invariant masses, new W and Z bosons, and very large momentum transfer parton-parton scattering. Simply stated, the goal is to obtain optimum detection and identification of electrons, muons, neutrinos,… more

Elementary particle physics---Experimental

Description: We are continuing a research program in high energy experimental particle physics and particle astrophysics. Studies of high energy hadronic interactions were performed using several techniques, in addition, a high energy leptoproduction experiment was continued at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We are participants in a joint US/Japan program to study nuclear interactions at energies two orders of magnitude greater than those of existing accelerators. The data are being collected wi… more

(The 1990 run of the WA80 experiment)

Description: The traveler spent six weeks at CERN participating in the 1990 run of the WA80 experiment. The traveler concentrated on trigger electronics for the first two weeks and on operation of the experiment for much of the next four. New electronics designed at ORNL for reading out the new BGO spectrometer were tested with the BGO in beam. Improvements were made, in collaboration with the ORNL engineers who designed the electronics. Plans were made for constructing the electronics in large quantities. … more

Plasma neutron diagnostic techniques with good spatial and energy resolution

Description: A neutron-detection system has been assembled to provide both spatial and energy information from the neutrons produced in advanced fusion experiments. Techniques described are applicable to experiments where the neutron pulse is on the order of one-second duration. The system gives spatial resolution of about 1 cm at distances of 1 to 2 m and energy resolution of 0.6 MeV at 14 MeV. In all cases, pulse-shape discrimination is used to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays.

SLED II: A new method of rf pulse compression

Description: In the SLED method of RF pulse compression, two high Q resonators store energy from an RF source for a relatively long time interval (typically 3 to 5 {mu}sec). Triggered by a reversal in RF phase, this stored energy is then released during a much shorter interval equal to the filling time of the accelerating structure. A peak power gain on the order of three and a compression efficiency on the order of 60% are typically attained. The shape of the output pulse is, however, a sharply decaying ex… more

The recoil proton polarization in. pi. p elastic scattering

Description: The polarization of the recoil proton for ..pi../sup +/p and ..pi../sup -/p elastic scattering has been measured for various angles at 547 MeV/c and 625 MeV/c by a collaboration involving The George Washington University; the University of California, Los Angeles; and Abilene Christian University. The experiment was performed at the P/sup 3/ East experimental area of the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. Beam intensities varied from 0.4 to 1.0 x 10/sup 7/ ..pi../sup -/'s/sec and from 3.0 to 10… more

The Ranchero explosive pulsed power system

Description: The authors are currently developing a high explosive pulsed power system concept that they call Ranchero. Ranchero systems consist of series-parallel combinations of simultaneously initiated coaxial magnetic flux compression generators, and are intended to operate in the range from 50 MA to a few hundred MA currents. One example of a Ranchero system is shown here. The coaxial modules lend themselves to extracting the current output either from one end or along the generator midplane. They have… more

Plastic Laminate Pulsed Power Development

Description: The desire to move high-energy Pulsed Power systems from the laboratory to practical field systems requires the development of compact lightweight drivers. This paper concerns an effort to develop such a system based on a plastic laminate strip Blumlein as the final pulseshaping stage for a 600 kV, 50ns, 5-ohm driver. A lifetime and breakdown study conducted with small-area samples identified Kapton sheet impregnated with Propylene Carbonate as the best material combination of those evaluated. … more

Pulsed power supply for PAR injection/extraction septum magnet

Description: A 22.5 {mu}H, 22.5 m{Omega} transformer septum magnet must be pulsed at a 60 Hz rate to inject beam from a 450 MeV positron linac into a positron accumulator ring (PAR) and to extract beam from it. Of the 60 pulses per second the first 24 are used for injection and the 30th for extraction. The 25th through the 29th are not used. This pattern is repeated continuously. A design study was performed of the power supply proposed in the APS Title I design. This supply produces a pulse that is approxi… more
