Effects of chemical carcinogens on hemopoiesis, immunopoiesis and viral oncogenesis. Three year technical progress report, February 1, 1977-September 30, 1979. [MMS; BP; DMBA; propane sultone; MCA; mice]

Description: Studies were initiated to evaluate in an in vitro system selected chemical carcinogens derived from energy producing hydrocarbons for their effect on the hematopoietic and immune systems. Studies were also conducted to determine whether the selected carcinogens could interact with leukemogenic virus to produce leukemia in mice. Five compounds have been investigated thus far: (1) methylmethane sulfonate (MMS); (2) benzo(a)pyrene (BP); (3) 7,12 dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA); (4) propane sulton… more

Relative potency as a means of evaluating ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) health risks

Description: In the 1970's, a variety of developments took place to heightened public and scientific interest in electromagnetic fields. During this time, biological studies of nonionizing electromagnetic fields were taking place, but no clear evidence of risks to public health was identified. Then came the surprising epidemiological finding suggesting that 60 Hz magnetic fields may be related to some childhood leukemias. Our particular interest at ORNL was how to interpret the available data with respect t… more

Cancer increase study methodology: A review and discussion of the ``Southeastern Massachusetts Health Study 1978--1986``

Description: In October 1990 the Massachusetts Department of Public Health released a report of an epidemiologic study of adult leukemia occurring in the vicinity of the Pilgrim 1 Nuclear Power Plant near Plymouth, Massachusetts. The study used a case-control design in which adult leukemia cases occurring between 1978 and 1986 in 22 towns were compared with persons without leukemia (controls) selected from the same study population. Exposure scores, used to estimate potential for exposure to radioactive emi… more

Human radiation studies: Remembering the early years: Oral history of physician James S. Robertson, M.D., Ph.D., conducted January 20, 1995

Description: This report is a transcript of in interview of Dr. James S. Robertson by representatives of the DOE Office of Human Radiation Experiments. Dr. Robertson was chosen for this interview because of his research at Brookhaven National Laboratory, especially on Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT); his work at the United States Naval Defense Laboratory; and his work at the Atomic Energy Commission. After a brief biographical sketch Dr. Robertson discusses research on human subjects at Berkeley, his c… more
