Electron heating and confinemet measurements in EBT-S using Thomson scattering

Description: Thomson scattering of ruby laser light was used to measure electron temperatures and densities in the ELMO Bumpy Torus-Scale (EBT-S) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The measurements were made primarily during May 1980, although some were taken during January 1980. The scattering system, which was designed for very low electron density measurements, features a 14-J ruby laser, a high-throughput spectrometer, and 15% quantum efficiency photomultipliers. The measured electron densities lie in th… more

Simple annulus power balance in EBT-I

Description: An essential feature of the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) concept is the presence of a relativistic electron annulus in each of the toroidal mirror sectors. These high beta annuli are formed and sustained by microwave heating and are of sufficient density and temperature that diamagnetic currents produce the necessary minimum in the magnetic field required for MHD stability of the toroidal core plasma. Because electron rings play an important role in confinement characteristics and performance of EBT,… more

Boundary layer studies related to fusion theory. Final report

Description: The described work studied the boundary between closed and open field lines in EBT geometry, with emphasis on the microstability properties. These properties were established primarily for drift waves in the lower hybrid range of frequencies. The transport due to these modes was evaluated by a self-consistent treatment, using quasilinear models in a plasma diffusion code. The model was benchmarked against the EDT experimental results from ORNL and the sensitivity to transport model established.… more

EBT-II conceptual design study

Description: The proposed EBT-II will use 48 superconducting coils to provide the required steady-state, cyclotron resonant, toroidal magnetic field of 4.3 T for electron cyclotron heating (ECH) with microwaves at 120 GHz. The peak design fields are 7.8 T in the coil, 6.0 T in the coil throat, and 3.0 T in the cavity midplane. Bulk ECH will be provided by eight 120-GHz, 200-kW cw gyrotrons, and provisions have been made for an additional 800 kW of cw profile heating in the range of 70 to 90 GHz. The torus m… more

Elmo Bumpy Torus Reactor. [Reference design]

Description: In the Elmo Bumpy Torus Reactor (EBTR) study the feasibility of achieving a fusion power plant based on the EBT confinement concept was evaluated. If the present understanding of the physics can be extrapolated to reactor scale devices the reactor could operate at high beta, high power density, and at steady state. The high aspect ratio of the device eases the accessibility, structural design and remote maintenance problems which are common to low aspect ratio machines. A version of the EBTR re… more

Synchrotron emission from the ring electrons in EBT

Description: The energy spectrum of the synchrotron radiation emitted by the relativistic ring electrons in ELMP bumpy Torus (EBT) has been calculated for various classes of isotropic and anisotropic ring electron distribution functions. Calculations have been carried out for present (EBT-I/S) and planned (EBT-P) experiments. The ring temperatures in EBT-I and EBT-S are approx. 200 and approx. 500 keV, respectively. The projected ring temperature in EBT-P is approx. 1000 to 1500 keV. The calculations indica… more

Anisotropic pressure and finite hot-electron Larmor-radius effects on ring stability

Description: The effect of the anisotropic pressure of a hot electron plasma on ballooning-interchange and compressional Alfven modes are investigated. General eigenmode equations for these modes are derived in the eikonal limit with finite gyro-radius effects retained. A local dispersion relation is obtained in the flute limit for an isotropic Maxwellian background plasma with a bi-Maxwellian hot electron population. Stability is investigated both analytically and numerically.

Status of the theoretical study of microwave heating in EBT

Description: The basic strategy of the theoretical study of microwave heating in the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) is outlined and the current status of the various aspects of the study is described. There are four broad areas which are being investigated: (1) heating and wave damping mechanisms, (2) the geometrical optics of microwave propagation in EBT, (3) reflection and mode conversion effects at regions such as cutoff and resonances where the geometrical optics approximation breaks down, and (4) nonlinear eff… more

Far-infrared laser diagnostic on EBT and extreme far-forward laser scattering on ISX

Description: A far-infrared (FIR) laser scattering diagnostic has been installed on the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) experiment, and tests conducted on the system using a TPX Bragg cell show that the system is fully functional. Scattering experiments to date have shown only small detectable signal levels during normal operation and during ion cyclotron heating (ICH) fast-wave and slow-wave propagation experiments. On the Impurity Study Experiment (ISX) the output signal from the rf amplifiers of the FIR interfero… more
