A Theory for Fluidelastic Instability of Tube-Support-Plate Inactive Modes

Description: Fluid-elastic instability of loosely supported tubes, vibrating in a tube-support-plate (TSP) inactive mode, is suspected to be one of the main causes of tube failure in some operating steam generators and heat exchangers. This report presents a mathematical model for fluid-elastic instability of loosely supported tubes exposed to non-uniform cross-flow. The model incorporates all motion-dependent fluid forces based on the unsteady flow theory. In the unstable region associated with a TSP-inact… more

HYLIFE-II power conversion system design and cost study

Description: The power conversion system for the HYLIFE-2 fusion power plant has been defined to include the IHX's (intermediate heat exchangers) and everything that support the exchange of energy from the reactor. It is referred to simply as the BOP (balance of plant) in the rest of this report. The above is a convenient division between the reactor equipment and the rest of the fusion power plant since the BOP design and cost then depend only on the specification of the thermal power to the IHX's and the … more

Results of scoping tests for open-cycle OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion) components operating with seawater

Description: This report presents comprehensive documentation of the experimental research conducted on open-cycle ocean thermal energy conversion (OC-OTEC) components operating with seawater as a working fluid. The results of this research are presented in the context of previous analysis and fresh-water testing; they provide a basis for understanding and predicting with confidence the performance of all components of an OC-OTEC system except the turbine. Seawater tests have confirmed the results that were… more

Carbon dioxide release from ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) cycles

Description: This paper presents the results of recent measurements of CO{sub 2} release from an open-cycle ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) experiment. Based on these data, the rate of short-term CO{sub 2} release from future open-cycle OTEC plants is projected to be 15 to 25 times smaller than that from fossil-fueled electric power plants. OTEC system that incorporate subsurface mixed discharge are expected to result in no long-term release. OTEC plants can significantly reduce CO{sub 2} emissions w… more

The Dynamic Variation of Particle Capture Efficiency During Ash Deposition in Coal-Fired Combustors

Description: Dynamic growth of ash deposits was studied in a carefully controlled environment using high speed video cameras and temperature controlled deposition probes. Deposition data are reported as a function of coal type, extent of particle burnout, and time. Five coals varying in rank from bituminous to lignite were tested. The coals were tested at conditions simulating three locations in a boiler; the near-flame region, the superheater region, and the convection pass. Details of deposit formation wer… more
