Development of magnetic order in superconducting systems

Description: Two different classes of rare-earth (RE) ternary superconductors (RERh/sub 4/B/sub 4/ and REMo/sub 6/S/sub 8/, X=S, Se) have provided the first instances in which chemically ordered sublattices of magnetic ions exist in superconductors. Neutron scattering studies show that simple, conventional antiferromagnetism coexists with superconductivity in a number of systems, while destruction of superconductivity occurs with the onset of ferromagnetism. The magnetic structural details are summarized fo… more

Containment of strontium fluoride at 800/sup 0/C: supplemental screening tests. [WESF-/sup 90/SrO/sub 2/]

Description: A program is currently underway at PNL to develop the data needed to permit the licensing of /sup 90/SrF/sub 2/ fueled heat sources. A major portion of the program is directed at identifying acceptable containment materials for /sup 90/SrF/sub 2/ in high temperature service. One phase of the compatibility studies involved a series of supplemental screening tests to measure in a cursory manner the relative resistance of 32 different containment materials to attack by nonradioactive strontium flu… more

Feasibility of electroplating platinum--iridium alloy out of fused chlorides

Description: The feasibility of plating platinum and platinum-iridium alloys out of molten chloride salts was tested. Electrolysis and cyclic voltammetry studies were made of the eutectic mixture of lithium chloride and potassium chloride with and without additions of potassium tetrachloroplatinite(II) (K/sub 2/PtCl/sub 4/) and potassium hexachloroiridite(III) (K/sub 3/IrCl/sub 6/). Platinum was deposited at 100 percent efficiency from melts containing it. The deposit was dendritic, coarsely crystalline, no… more

Towards a first-principles thermodynamics of solids

Description: Total energy density-functional methods have made it possible to calculate, from first principles, such important properties as cohesive energies, lattice constants and elastic moduli for elemental crystals and perfectly ordered compounds. Real solids are imperfect, however, so that lattice vibrations and compositional disorder lead to entropy contributions, vibrational and configurational. When these effects are included in an appropriate manner, properties of real crystals can be computed ab … more

Influence of magnetic ordering on the superconducting properties of amorphous (Zr/sub 1-x/Er/sub x/)/sub 3/Rh alloys

Description: The effect of Er impurities on the superconducting properties of an amorphous Zr/sub 3/Rh alloy has been studied. The Er impurities are found to exhibit magnetic behavior characteristic of a free Er/sup 3 +/ ion in a weak crystal field. Magnetic ordering of the Er moments is observed to occur at a temperature T/sub M/ which is proportional to the Er concentration. This ordering strongly influences superconductivity as evidenced by anomalous behavior in the concentration dependence of T/sub c/. … more
