Investigation of a fossil geothermal system, Hamblin-Cleopatra Volcano, Clark County, Nevada. Final technical report

Description: The Hamblin-Cleopatra volcano, selected for study because erosion and fault displacement have exposed the entire volcanic succession, the intrusive core, a radial dike systems, and sedimentary and volcanic rocks that predate and postdate the volcano, was investigated to estimate the proportions of igneous materials forming lava flows, pyroclastic deposits, intrusive bodies, and reworked debris. Chemical changes in the magma throughout the active period of the volcano were documented. The geothe… more

Geology and geochemistry of samples from Los Alamos National Laboratory HDR Well EE-2, Fenton Hill, New Mexico

Description: Petrologic, geochemical, and structural analyses of cores and cuttings obtained from 3000 to 4389-m true vertical depth in drill hole EE-2 indicate that this deeper part of the Precambrian section at Fenton Hill, New Mexico is composed primarily of a very heterogeneous and structurally anisotropic metamorphic complex, locally intruded by dikes and sills of granodioritic and monzogranitic composition. In this borehole none of these igneous bodies approach in size the 335-m-thick biotite-granodio… more

Refining of fossil resin flotation concentrate from Western coal. Second quarterly final report, April 1, 1993--June 30, 1993

Description: Ultimate analysis was conducted for the fossil resin concentrate and results obtained are given in Table 2. Based on these results and other results from spectroscopic analysis it appears that the fossil resin from the Wasatch Plateau coal field consists mainly of aliphatic components and partially aromatized multicyclic terpenoids with a few oxygen functional groups. As compared with the parent high volatile bituminous coal, the resin has higher hydrogen and carbon content, low oxygen, nitroge… more

Advanced direct coal liquefaction concepts. Quarterly report, January 1, 1993--March 31, 1993

Description: Five barrels of a Wilsonville process derived solvent (V-1074) from Black Thunder coal were obtained. This material boils within the preferred gas oil range, is more aromatic than previous solvents, and will therefore be used for the bench unit studies. Several repeat runs were performed in the autoclave to confirm the results of the matrix study. In addition, runs were carried out with different catalysts, with agglomerates and with the V-1074 solvent. The results of the autoclave runs were an… more

Oil recovery enhancement from fractured, low permeability reservoirs. [Quarterly] report, January 1, 1993--March 31, 1993

Description: Progress reports are presented for the following: Subtask l-- interpreting and predicting fractures; Subtask 2--relating recovery to well-log signatures; and Subtask 4--mathematical modeling. Some of the highlights are as follows; substantial improvement in the determination of the orientation of the fractures has been obtained when source imbalances are corrected; further improvement is achieved when the down-hole geophones are assumed to be in the direction of the sources and their coupling v… more

Heterogeneous Shallow-Shelf Carbonate Buildups in the Paradox Basin, Utah and Colorado: Targets for Increased Oil Production and Reserves Using Horizontal Drilling Techniques

Description: This report covers research activities for the second half of the second project year (October 6, 2001, through April 5, 2002). This work includes description and analysis of cores, correlation of geophysical well logs, reservoir mapping, petrographic description of thin sections, cross plotting of permeability and porosity data, and development of horizontal drilling strategies for the Little Ute and Sleeping Ute fields in Montezuma County, Colorado. Geological characterization on a local scal… more
