Description: This document is the final report of the solar energy heating and hot water system installed at the Kansas City Fire Station, Number 24, 2309 Hardesty Street, Kansas City, Missouri. The solar system was designed to provide 47 percent of the space heating, 8800 square feet area and 75 percent of the domestic hot water (DHW) load. The solar system consists of 2808 square feet of Solaron, model 2001, air, flat plate collector subsystem, a concrete box storage subsystem which contains 1428 cubic fe… more

Renewable Resources: a national catalog of model projects. Volume 2. Mid-American Solar Energy Complex Region

Description: This compilation of diverse conservation and renewable energy projects across the United States was prepared through the enthusiastic participation of solar and alternate energy groups from every state and region. Compiled and edited by the Center for Renewable Resources, these projects reflect many levels of innovation and technical expertise. In many cases, a critique analysis is presented of how projects performed and of the institutional conditions associated with their success or failure. … more

National hydroelectric power resources study. Preliminary inventory of hydropower resources. Volume 4. Lake Central region

Description: The estimates of existing, incremental and the undeveloped hydropower potential for all states in the various regions of the country are presented. In the Lake Central region, the maximum physical potential for all sites exceeds 26,000 MW with an estimated average annual energy of more than 75,000 GWH. By comparison, these values represent about 5% of both the total potential capacity and hydroelectric energy estimated for the entire US. Of the total capacity estimated for the region, 2600 MW h… more

National hydroelectric power resources study. Preliminary inventory of hydropower resources. Volume 3. Mid-Continent region

Description: The US Corps of Engineers' assessment of the nation's hydroelectric resources provides a current and comprehensive estimate of the potential for incremental or new generation at existing dams and other water resource projects, as well as for undeveloped sites in the US. The demand for hydroelectric power is addressed and various related policy and technical considerations are investigated to determine the incentives, constraints, and impacts of developing hydropower to meet a portion of the fut… more

Grid-Connected Integrated Community Energy System: Final Report, Volume 2

Description: A preliminary feasibility analysis of a grid-connected ICES in the City of Independence, Missouri, is presented. It is found that the ICES concept can be made feasible in Independence by employing a 20-MW coal-fired boiler and turbine and using waste heat to provide the energy for heating and cooling commercial facilities with over 3 million square feet of floor space. When fully loaded thermally, the ICES results in favorable fuel utilization and energy conservation in comparison to convention… more

National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program. Hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance basic data for Manhattan NTMS Quadrangle, Kansas

Description: Results of a reconnaissance geochemical survey of the Manhattan Quadrangle, Kansas, are reported. Field and laboratory data are presented for 674 groundwater and 718 stream sediment samples. Statistical and areal distributions of uranium and possible uranium-related variables are displayed. A generalized geologic map of the survey area is provided, and pertinent geologic factors which may be of significance in evaluating the potential for uranium mineralization are briefly discussed. The ground… more

Soil fertility and soil loss constraints on crop residue removal for energy production

Description: A summary of the methodologies used to estimate the soil fertility and soil loss constraints on crop residue removal for energy production is presented. Estimates of excess residue are developed for wheat in north-central Oklahoma and for corn and soybeans in central Iowa. These sample farming situations are analyzed in other research in the Analysis Division of the Solar Energy Research Institute.

Impact of surface coal mining and reclamation on the hydrogeology at Iowa Coal Project Demonstration Mine No. 1, Mahaska County, Iowa

Description: The groundwater effects of surface mining at ICP No. 1 can be classified primarily as water quality and water quantity effects. The water quantity effects are: the loss of groundwater saturation in spoil materials that were initially removed from over the coal and later replaced; the dewatering of high permeability geologic strata up gradient of mining area; the increase in porosity and possibly permeability in refilled spoil materials; and the change in groundwater gradients in mined areas and… more

Floatability of coal and pyrite. [54 references]

Description: An experimental investigation was carried out to improve the froth flotation method of separating coal pyrite. The effect of several surface active agents on the floatability of an Iowa coal and its associated pyrite was studied in both the presence and absence of methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), a commonly used frother. The effectiveness of a special method of chemical pretreatment for depressing pyrite was also investigated. The zeta potential of the same coal and pyrite was measured under th… more

Study of atmospheric pollution scavenging. Eighteenth progress report

Description: The analysis of aerosol samples obtained in rural east-central Illinois reveals a seasonal maximum in SO/sub 4/ during May to July and a similar pattern for NH/sub 4/. The annual median SO/sub 4/ is about 1 to 1.5 ..mu..g/m/sup 3/. In contrast to these ions, NO/sub 3/ displays highest values in the cold season. Soil-related species (Ca, K) seem to maximize in relation to farm tillage and harvesting practices. The NO/sub 3/ in recent precipitation samples over the northeast US increased between … more

Evaluation of potential geothermal resource areas

Description: A method for the comparative evaluation of geothermal prospects in the Eastern United States is proposed and illustrated. Comparisons are based on quantified data from geologic, engineering, and socio-economic sources including temperature gradient, depth to basement, drilling costs, population, and distribution by town size, as well as energy use in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
