Boron reclamation

Description: A process to recover high purity /sup 10/B enriched crystalline boron powder from a polymeric matrix was developed on a laboratory basis and ultimately scaled up to production capacity. The process is based on controlled pyrolysis of boron-filled scrap followed by an acid leach and dry sieving operation to return the powder to the required purity and particle size specifications. Measurement of energy deposited by charged-particle beams in composite targets

Description: We have measured the energy deposited in two types of composite targets by a number of charged-particle beams: targets made of /sup 238/U, Lucite, and polyethylene were exposed to 0.26-GeV protons and 0.33-GeV deuterons, and aluminum-Lucite composites were exposed to 0.5-GeV electrons. Measurements of /sup 234/U, /sup 238/U and /sup 230/Th in excreta of uranium-mill crushermen

Description: Uranium and thorium levels in excreta of uranium mill crushermen who are routinely exposed to airborne uranium ore dust were measured. The purpose was to determine whether /sup 230/Th was preferentially retained over either /sup 234/U or /sup 238/U in the body. Statistical methods for including two-body forces in large system calculations

Description: Large systems of interacting particles are often treated by assuming that the effect on any one particle of the remaining N-1 may be approximated by an average potential. This approach reduces the problem to that of finding the bound-state solutions for a particle in a potential; statistical mechanics is then used to obtain the properties of the many-body system. /sup 56/Ni and the light curve of Type I supernova

Description: The explanation of SN Type I by radioactive decay of /sup 56/Ni requires a relatively small value of the transparency function M/sub ej//v/sub 9//sup 2/ = 0.22 in units of M/sub solar/'s and 10/sup 9/ cm s/sup -1/ to explain the light curve. A minimum mass of /sup 56/Ni is required to explain the peak and near peak luminosity. REMOTE DISSOLUTION AND ANALYTICAL PROGRAM FOR IRRADIATED THORIUM

Description: A remote dissolution and analytical program for irradiated thorium is given. The aluminum jacket on the slug was dissolved with 6M nitric acid and 0.005M mercuric nitrate. After a water wash, the thorium dissolution was accomplished with concentrated nitric acid made 0.04M in hydrofluoric acid. Potential of pyroprocessing for partitioning purex wastes

Description: The processes are extremely compact. The process reagents are highly resistant to radiation damage and, therefore, can be used to handle short-cooled, highly concentrated waste with negligible degradation. /sup 3/H(p,n)/sup 3/He differential cross sections below 5 MeV and the n-/sup 3/He cross sections. [2. 5 and 4. 0 MeV]

Description: Complete angular distributions for the /sup 3/H(p,n)/sup 3/He reaction were measured at 2.5 and 4.0 MeV with the /sup 1/H(t,n)/sup 3/He reaction used to obtain the backward yields. Because the distributions are peaked about 17% more strongly in the backward direction than the best previous elevation suggests (based on extrapolated data), the /sup 3/H(p,n)/sup 3/He reaction cross sections below 5 MeV were re-evaluated without the extrapolated data. Quarterly report on the strontium heat source development program, Advanced Nuclear Systems and Projects Division for April-June 1980

Description: Oak Ridge National Laboratory completed metallographic examination of the metal specimens from the 30,000-h compatibility tests with /sup 90/SrF/sub 2/. Electron microprobe analysis of the specimens is now under way. Results show that chemical attack of the 30,000-h specimens was not much greater than that observed in the 6000- to 20,000-h tests. Transport of radon and thoron at the earth's surface

Description: This report covers progress under the current funding period 1 Jan 1992 to 1 Jan 1993 and presents the continuation proposal for 1 Jan 1993 to 1 Jan 1994. The previous progress report was submitted in June 1991, so activities during the last half of 1991 will also be included. Description: Subsurface waters at Maxey Flats are anoxic systems with high alkalinity and high concentrations of dissolved ferrous ion. Multicomponent mass transport model: a model for simulating migration of radionuclides in ground water

Description: This report presents the results of the development of a one-dimensional radionuclide transport code, MMT2D (Multicomponent Mass Transport), for the AEGIS Program. Description: Measurements by moveable Langmuir probes and edge spectroscopy diagnostics have documented the conditioning effect of low density helium-initiated discharge sequences on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) edge plasma. Results of the radiological survey at Kennedy Park, Money and Sidney Streets, Lodi, New Jersey (LJ062)

Description: Maywood Chemical Works (MCW) of Maywood, New Jersey, generated process wastes and residues associated with the production and refining of thorium and thorium compounds from monazite ores from 1916 to 1956. MCW supplied rare earth metals and thorium compounds to the Atomic Energy Commission and various other government agencies from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s. Isotope effect on the zero point energy shift upon condensation

Description: The various isotope-dependent and independent atomic and molecular properties that pertain to the isotopic difference between the zero point energy (ZPE) shifts upon condensation were derived.
