In-Home Performance of Exempt Pellet Stoves in Medford, Oregon.

Description: Pellet stoves that are considered exempt'' operate at an air-to-fuel ratio in excess of 35:1. They therefore qualify for exemption from the emissions certification process. A primary goal of this project was to determine how a sample of such stoves, operated in homes, would perform compared to their certified cousins,'' which were evaluated the previous year. In-home performance data documenting emissions from exempt stoves and net delivered efficiencies was particularly desired. This project e… more

Use of Optically Stimulated Luminescence Imaging Plates and Reader for Arms Control Applications

Description: Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) technology has been pioneered at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for applications in personnel radiation dosimetry and commercially has become highly successful in replacing older technologies such as Thermoluminescence Dosimeters (TLDs) and film. OSL phosphors are used to measure radiation exposure by illuminating them with light after ionizing radiation exposure and measuring the amount of light emitted by the OSL phosphor. By using a t… more

Computer codes for processing data from coal-fired power plants. [PROGE, PROGX, PROGW, FM77, and FM88 Computer Codes]

Description: Computer codes are used to assist the reduction of data from the LLL project assessing emissions of coal-fired power plants. Five programs, PROGE, PROGX, PROGW, FM77, and FM78, have been developed recently to sort, reduce, and display data acquired from cascade impactor samples. The data include elemental concentrations, enrichment factors, standard deviations, weighted averages, and unit conversions. The procedures required to run these programs are given in this report.

Flight Determination of the Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of a 0.125-Scale Rocket-Boosted Model of the Mcdonnell F-101 Airplane at Mach Numbers from 0.82 to 1.84

Description: From Summary: "A flight test has been conducted to determine the longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a 0.125-scale model of the McDonnell F-101A airplane for the Mach number range between 0.82 and 1.84. The variation of lift-curve slope with Mach number was gradual with a maximum value of 0.107 occurring at a Mach number of 0.95. The minimum drag coefficient (including base and internal drag) has a value of 0.020 at a Mach number of 0.87. The drag rise begins at a Mach number … more

Flight determination of the effects of rudder-pedal-force characteristics on the aiming error in azimuth of a conventional fighter airplane

Description: Report presenting flight tests to study the effect on aiming error in azimuth of a change in the rudder-pedal-force characteristics of a conventional fighter airplane equipped with an illuminated fixed gunsight. The effect of the modification on the mean azimuth tracking errors was insignificant, but pilots noted that the modified rudder made it tiring to fly the airplane for any length of time.

Linac Energy Management for LCLS

Description: Linac Energy Management (LEM) is a control system program that scales magnet field set-point settings following a change in beam energy. LEM is necessary because changes in the number, phase, and amplitude of the active klystrons change the beam's rigidity, and therefore, to maintain constant optics, one has to change focusing gradients and bend fields accordingly. This paper describes the basic process, the control system application programs we developed for LEM, and some of the implementatio… more

Diesel Engine Waste Heat Recovery Utilizing Electric Turbocompound Technology

Description: Caterpillar's Technology & Solutions Division conceived, designed, built and tested an electric turbocompound system for an on-highway heavy-duty truck engine. The heart of the system is a unique turbochargerr with an electric motor/generator mounted on the shaft between turbine and compressor wheels. When the power produced by the turbocharger turbine exceeds the power of the compressor, the excess power is converted to electrical power by the generator on the turbo shaft; that power is then u… more

Conversion and Blending Facility Highly enriched uranium to low enriched uranium as uranium hexafluoride. Revision 1

Description: This report describes the Conversion and Blending Facility (CBF) which will have two missions: (1) convert surplus HEU materials to pure HEU UF{sub 6} and a (2) blend the pure HEU UF{sub 6} with diluent UF{sub 6} to produce LWR grade LEU-UF{sub 6}. The primary emphasis of this blending be to destroy the weapons capability of large, surplus stockpiles of HEU. The blended LEU product can only be made weapons capable again by the uranium enrichment process. The chemical and isotopic concentrations… more

Wind-tunnel tests of the static longitudinal characteristics at low speed of a swept-wing airplane with blowing flaps and leading-edge slats

Description: Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation of a high-wing airplane with an aspect ratio 6.75 wing with approximately 36 degrees of sweepback to determine the lift effectiveness obtainable with trailing-edge blowing flaps in combination with leading-edge slats. Flap effectiveness and stability were maintained to high angles of attack by control of leading-edge flow separation with slats. An analysis of the take-off performance, landing performance, and comparisons with flight data are provide… more
