Measurements Through a Hot Cell Window Using Optical Tooling

Description: S>Optical tooling has been evaluated for the measurement of physical dimensions of radioactive parts through hot cell windows. Instruments were set up outside of a four foot thick lead glass window and by means of a grid plate which had been accurately scribed, a ''contour map'' or calibration chart of the window variations was recorded. Although the window was not specially selected, the readings were within 1.0% of the true dimension without using correction factors. One of the calibration ch… more

Stress Analysis of Bulk Effluent System Components in B and C Reactors

Description: This report presents a study of the stresses induced in the elbow and downcomer of the B and C Reactors (bulk effluent systems) by flow momentum and pressurization effects. It is desirable to ascertain the limitations on the bulk outlet temperatures and flow rates from a stress viewpoint; the elbow, top coverplate of downcomer, and top baffle plate being the most severely stressed components.

EFFECT ON POWER COST OF SUBSTITUTING ALUMINUM FOR ZIRCONIUM FUEL CLADDING IN A BOILING WATER REACTOR

Description: The substitution of Al-clad for Zr-clad fuel necessitates reducing the operating temperature. The amount of saving that must be made in fabrication and chemical reprocessing to overcome the cost of operating at reduced thermal efficiency is estimated for a boiling water reactor. (auth)

Local Instability of the Elements of a Truss-Core Sandwich Plate

Description: The charts presented give the compressive buckling coefficients for a single-truss-core and a double-truss-core sandwich plate. These charts cover a wide range of sandwich proportions and may be used for sandwiches with unequal faces. They apply to inplane compressive loads acting parallel or perpendicular to the core direction or for various combinations of these loads. (author).

HRT Pressure Vessel Temperatures During Operation - An Evaluation Using Data From Run 16

Description: A study was made of the data taken during HRT Run 16, concerning the temperatures and thermal stresses in the pressure vessel. By making heat balances across the blast shield cooling coils, the pressure vessel cooling system was shown to be performing satisfactorily. Estimates of the thermal stress in the pressure vessel wall show values which range from 1800 psi it low power to 6800 psi at 5 Mw. The thermal stress does not appear to be excessive in this power range. The over-all heat generatio… more

Design of an Eddy-Current Brake for a Sodium-Cooled Nuclear Power Reactor

Description: Two eddy-current electromagnets to act as brskes were designed and installed in the sodium-cooled nuclear pcwer reactor SRE to throttle sodium flow throughout the reactor after shutdown in order to maintain a constant reactor temperature gradient. One brake was used on the primary piping system, the other on the secondary system. It was determined that the eddy-current brake should cause a dragging pressure of 0.3 psi at a flow rate of 12 gal/min. The flux density necessary to produce this pres… more

Boundary-Layer-Transition Measurements in Full-Scale Flight

Description: Report presenting tests of the extent of laminar flow that can be obtained with practical wing-surface conditions. Chemical sublimation was used for boundary-layer-flow visualization on the wings of a supersonic fighter airplane in level flight. A method of continuous monitoring using heat temperature resistance gauges was also used on one wing.

Boundary-Layer-Transition Measurements in Full-Scale Flight

Description: Chemical sublimation has been employed for boundary-layer-flow visualization on the wings of a supersonic fighter airplane in level flight at speeds near a Mach number of 2.0. The tests have shown that laminar flow can be obtained over extensive areas of the wing with practical wing-surface conditions. In addition to the flow visualization tests, a method of continuously monitoring the conditions of the boundary layer has been applied to flight testing, using heated temperature resistance gages… more

ANALYSIS OF THE STATUS OF CHROMIUM IN SOLUTION UNDER IN-PILE CONDITIONS

Description: A summary of the Cr data from the HRP in-pile corrosion program is examined in an effort to determine the Cr species present in such solutions under in-pile conddtions. Data from previous in-pile bomb and loop experiments pertinent to Cr behavior are tabulated, and correlations are offered to support a proposed model. It is pointed out that other interpretations of the same data are possible, and to obtain conclusive evidence as to the identity of Cr species in these solutions, especially desig… more

Handbook of Structural Stability Part 6: Strength of Stiffened Curved Plates and Shells

Description: "A comprehensive review of failure of stiffened curved plates and shells is presented. Panel instability in stiffened curved plates and general instability of stiffened cylinders are discussed. The loadings considered for the plates are axial, shear, and the combination of the two. Correlation of Polarographic Walf-Wave Potentials With Nuclear Magnetic Resonance "Chemical Shifts." Parallel Correlation With Chemical Reactivity Parameters. Report No. 35

Description: Since nuclear magnetic resonance ''chemical shifts'' are considered to be good measures of electron densities in molecules, the extent to which they can be correlated with the polarographic half-wave potentials of organic compounds has been surveyed. To extend the applicability and interpretation of the proposed correlation, parallel correlatioan of E, with Hammett's sigma and Taft's sigma parameters were made, since both of the latter are also regarded as indication of electronic distrinution … more

Effects of Boundary-Layer Displacement and Leading-Edge Bluntness on Pressure Distribution, Skin Friction, and Heat Transfer of Bodies at Hypersonic Speeds

Description: "Results are presented of an investigation to determine the effect of boundary-layer displacement and leading-edge bluntness on surfaces in hypersonic flow. The presence of the boundary layer and the blunt leading edge induce pressure gradients which in turn affect the skin friction and heat transfer to the surface. Methods for predicting these phenomena on two-dimensional surfaces are given and a brief review of recent three-dimensional results is presented" (p. 1).

MAXIMUM MISSILE RANGES FROM CASED EXPLOSIVE CHARGES

Description: Curves are calculated and plotted to show maximum missile ranges from TNT changes cased with aluminum or steel of various thicknesses. The maxfmum initial missile velocity is assumed to be 10,000 fps. General trajectory formulas are derived from which the range may be calculated for any initial missile velocity, as determined from the ratio of the case weight to the explosive weight. (auth)
