Energy dependence of metallic-encapsulated thermoluminescent dosimeters. Annual report

Description: The gamma-ray energy responses of encapsulated /sup 7/LiF and CaF/sub 2/:Mn thermoluminescent dosimeters were measured and compred to calculated values. This study was performed in order to improve the accuracy of gamma-ray heating measurements made in polyenergetic gamma-ray fields such as Argonne National Laboratory's Zero Power Reactors. Equations used in the development of the TERC/III computer code and code input parameters are specified. A section on TLD precision is also included. Compar… more

Tank 241-A-105 leak assessment

Description: Tank 241-A-105 is one of 149 single shell tanks constructed at Hanford to contain and store highly radioactive wastes originating from the processing of spent nuclear reactor fuel. Radiation detection and temperature monitoring devices installed beneath the tank indicate that several episodes of leakage of waste from the tank have occurred. The aim of this study was to evaluate the previous estimates and reanalyze the data to provide a more accurate estimate of leakage from the tank. The princi… more

Gamma-thermometer-based reactor-core liquid-level detector. [PWR]

Description: A system is provided which employs a modified gamma thermometer for determining the liquid coolant level within a nuclear reactor core. The gamma thermometer which normally is employed to monitor local core heat generation rate (reactor power), is modified by thermocouple junctions and leads to obtain an unambiguous indication of the presence or absence of coolant liquid at the gamma thermometer location. A signal processor generates a signal based on the thermometer surface heat transfer coeff… more

Experiments to investigate direct containment heating phenomena with scaled models of the Surry Nuclear Power Plant

Description: The Containment Technology Test Facility (CTTF) and the Surtsey Test Facility at Sandia National Laboratories are used to perform scaled experiments that simulate High Pressure Melt Ejection accidents in a nuclear power plant (NPP). These experiments are designed to investigate the effects of direct containment heating (DCH) phenomena on the containment load. High-temperature, chemically reactive melt (thermite) is ejected by high-pressure steam into a scale model of a reactor cavity. Debris is… more

LMFBR Blanket Physics Project progress report No. 6

Description: Progress is summarized in experimental and analytical investigations of the neutronics and photonics of benchmark mockups of LMFBR blankets. During the reporting period work was devoted primarily to a wide range of analytical/numerical investigations, including blanket fuel management/economics studies, evaluation of improved blanket designs, and assessment of state-of-the-art methods for gamma heating calculations. Experimental work included preparations for resumption of MIT Reactor operation… more

Heating of D/sub 2/ gas targets by intense tritium ion beams

Description: This study examines the problem of heating due to bombarding a D/sub 2/ gas with a T/sup +/ beam to produce 14-MeV neutrons. Such a neutron source is proposed for testing the effects of neutrons on materials to be used in a fusion reactor. Ionization and electronic state excitation by the beam and ionization, electronic and vibrational excitation, dissociation, momentum transfer, and dissociative recombination by secondary electrons are considered. For most beam energies of interest, ionization… more
