Resonant-cavity ICRF coupler for large tokamaks

Description: A new resonant-cavity ICRF coupler is proposed for large tokamaks. The design features a novel resonant cavity, an rf magnetic-field orientation that effectively radiates fast Alfven waves, matching to 40 ..cap omega.. transmission lines, and an electric-field orientation so that the strongest rf electric fields are orthogonal to the main toroidal magnetic field thereby benefitting from magnetic insulation. Motional Stark effect polarimetry for the current profile diagnostic in DIII-D

Description: Motional Stark effect produces large net linear polarization of hydrogenic beam emissions. Measurement of the polarization direction permits to determine the local magnetic field pitch angle. Design of a single point, spatially scannable, high-sensitivity polarimeter installed on DIII-D is described. Excellent signal-to-noise ratio with good temporal and spatial resolution was obtained in preliminary measurements of magnetic field pitch angle. 9 refs., 3 figs.

Doublet III: status and future plans

Description: A synopsis is presented of the experimental results from the ohmic heating phase of Doublet III, with emphasis on the production of good target plasmas for the upcoming neutral beam injection phase. The program plan for the device over the life of the US-Japan cooperative program is discussed, as is the status of the preliminary investigation into replacing the present vacuum vessel by one better suited for ETF simulation.
