Chemical Technology Division Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, September 1961

Description: Nine samples of ThO/sub 2/ -UO/sub 2/ prepared as part of the solgel process development studies showed no consistent effects from small variations in several process parameters. The reaction of methane and copper oxide was studied. Engineering studies of the continuous dissolution of simulated U-Zr-Sn fuels in 6.5 M NH4F, 0.6-1.0 M NH/sub 4/NO/sub 3/, 0.1 M H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ were continued in modified 6-in.-dia. equipment. A total of 1642 kg of U from NaK bonded SRE Core I fuel rods wad dejacke… more

Chemical Technology Division Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, December 1961

Description: The height of transfer units in a 6-in.-ID foam-liquid column for isotopic exchange or stripping of Sr using Sr/sup 89/ tracer were 1.4 to 4.6 in. Denitration of Th(NO/sub 3/)/sub 4/ in an agitated trough to give thoria for dispersion into a sol is reproducible. The loading of UF/sub 6/ on a single layer of 1/8in. right circular cylinders of NaF in the presence of a flowing UF/ sub 6/-N/sub 2/ stream showed strong dependence on gas concentration in the range of 0.58 to 8.0 mole% UF/sub 6/ and a… more

Molten salt oxidation of chloro-organic compounds: Experimental results for product gas compositions and final forms studies

Description: Molten salt oxidation (MSO) has been selected as a promising technology for treatment of some US Department of Energy (DOE) mixed wastes. Mixed wastes are defined as those wastes that contain both radioactive components, which are regulated by the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, and hazardous waste components, which are regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has installed and operated a bench-scale MSO apparatus to obtain experimental … more

Chemical Technology Division, Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report for January 1959

Description: Two alternate systems, acetic acid-nickel and acetic acid-cobalt, were examined for possible replacement of the corrosion system: ferric chloride-nickel which is being used in the current transpiration corrosion protection studies. Two Fluorox fluidized bed runs were made, of 9 and 58 hr duration, in which dry air and oxygen were used as oxidizing and fluidizing gases. Tests of the hydroclone classification of thoria indicated that more than 95% of the +0.5 micron particles can be removed from … more

Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, October 1961

Description: Additional runs were made in the 6-in.-dia. separation column. The kinetics of the methane --copper oxide reaction was investigated in deep bed tests. The work on the development of the shear included a satisfactory method of ng, preliminary test of an outer gag faced with rubber, and a metallic inner gsg contoured to the shape of a sheared assembly. The mechanical dejacketing of the SRE Core I fuel, NaK-bonded, stainless steel-clad uranium slugs, was successfully completed. The effective therr… more
