Experience report with the Alignment Diagnostic System

Description: Since 2009 an Alignment Diagnostic System (ADS) has been operating at the undulator of the new Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The undulator spans a distance of 132 meters and is structured into 33 segments. Each segment is equipped with four hydrostatic leveling sensors and four wire position monitors. This report describes the set up and reflects the experience gained with the ADS.

ILC Marx Modulator Development Program Status

Description: Development of a first generation prototype (P1) Marx-topology klystron modulator for the International Linear Collider is nearing completion at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. It is envisioned as a smaller, lower cost, and higher reliability alternative to the present, bouncer-topology, 'Baseline Conceptual Design'. The Marx presents several advantages over conventional klystron modulator designs. It is physically smaller; there is no pulse transformer (quite massive at ILC parameters)… more

DPSS Laser Beam Quality Optimization Through Pump Current Tuning

Description: The goal of this study is to demonstrate how a DPSS laser beam's quality parameters can be simultaneously optimized through pump current tuning. Two DPSS lasers of the same make and model were used where the laser diode pump current was first varied to ascertain the lowest RMS noise region. The lowest noise was found to be 0.13% in this region and the best M{sup 2} value of 1.0 and highest laser output power were simultaneously attained at the same current point. The laser manufacturer reported… more

FDIRC design for SuperB

Description: We describe a new design of a focusing DIRC (FDIRC) for the barrel PID at SuperB. The new FDIRC will use a new detector camera attached to the existing BaBar DIRC bar boxes. The camera's double-folded optics, made of solid fused silica, uses two mirrors, one cylindrical, and one flat. The camera's volume is 25-times smaller than the BaBar DIRC stand-off box, and its photon detectors will be 10-times faster than the BaBar DIRC PMTs, ensuring a good protection against backgrounds at SuperB, which… more

PID techniques: Alternatives to RICH Methods

Description: In this review article we discuss the recent progress in PID techniques other than the RICH methods. In particular we mention the recent progress in the Transition Radiation Detector (TRD), dE/dx cluster counting, and Time Of Flight (TOF) techniques. The TRD technique is mature and has been tried in many hadron colliders. It needs space though, about 20cm of detector radial space for every factor of 10 in the {pi}/e rejection power, and this tends to make such detectors large. Although the clus… more

Instrument tests with the new Leica AT401

Description: In order to evaluate the performance of the Leica Absolute Tracker AT401 we devised a series of tests. The first was to compare the Laser Tracker distance measurements to our interferometer on a 30 m long horizontal bench. The second was a check of the horizontal angle measurement accuracy and the 'level to gravity' feature. The third was to check the warm up behaviour and the instrument stability. All these tests were performed in our underground test facility at sector 10 of the SLAC linac. T… more

Measurement of the Charge Collection Efficiency After Heavy Non-Uniform Irradiation in BABAR Silicon Detectors

Description: We have investigated the depletion voltage changes, leakage current increase and charge collection efficiency of a silicon microstrip detector identical to those used in the inner layers of the BABAR Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) after heavy nonuniform irradiation. A full SVT module with the front-end electronics connected has been irradiated with a 0.9 GeV electron beam up to a peak fluence of 3.5 x 10{sup 14} e{sup -}/cm{sup 2}, well beyond the level causing substrate type inversion. We have i… more
