Decomposition of Large Scale Semantic Graphsvia an Efficient Communities Algorithm

Description: Semantic graphs have become key components in analyzing complex systems such as the Internet, or biological and social networks. These types of graphs generally consist of sparsely connected clusters or 'communities' whose nodes are more densely connected to each other than to other nodes in the graph. The identification of these communities is invaluable in facilitating the visualization, understanding, and analysis of large graphs by producing subgraphs of related data whose interrelationship… more

LDRD final report on massively-parallel linear programming : the parPCx system.

Description: This report summarizes the research and development performed from October 2002 to September 2004 at Sandia National Laboratories under the Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project ''Massively-Parallel Linear Programming''. We developed a linear programming (LP) solver designed to use a large number of processors. LP is the optimization of a linear objective function subject to linear constraints. Companies and universities have expended huge efforts over decades to produce f… more

MARKAL-MACRO: A linked model for energy-economy analysis

Description: MARKAL-MACRO is an experiment in model linkage for energy and economy analysis. This new tool is intended as an improvement over existing methods for energy strategy assessment. It is designed specifically for estimating the costs and analyzing the technologies proposed for reducing environmental risks such as global climate change or regional air pollution. The greenhouse gas debate illustrates the usefulness of linked energy-economy models. A central issue is the coupling between economic gro… more

Finite Element Interface to Linear Solvers (FEI) version 2.9 : users guide and reference manual.

Description: The Finite Element Interface to Linear Solvers (FEI) is a linear system assembly library. Sparse systems of linear equations arise in many computational engineering applications, and the solution of linear systems is often the most computationally intensive portion of the application. Depending on the complexity of problems addressed by the application, there may be no single solver package capable of solving all of the linear systems that arise. This motivates the need to switch an application… more

New approaches to linear and nonlinear programming

Description: This program involves study of theoretical properties and computational performance of algorithms that solve linear and nonlinear programs. Emphasis is placed on algorithms to solve large problems, especially in the energy area. E.g., the safe, efficient distribution of electricity and the identification of the state of an electrical network are both large-scale nonlinearly constrained optimization problems. Other applications include optimal trajectory calculations and optimal structural desig… more

Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Habitat and Timber Management Production Possibilities

Description: In order to mitigate the impact of longer rotations for the red-cockaded woodpecker on timber production, a multi-objective linear programming model was used. Various streams of habitat in relation to timber management were examined. Large areas immediately set aside for habitat may, in fact, lead to long term declines as a result of poor initial stand conditions. Timber production, harvesting and various silvicultural activities will have a short term impact but lead to long-term sustainable h… more
