Studies of helium based drift chamber gases for high-luminosity low energy machines

Description: Future high luminosity low energy machines will need low mass tracking chambers to order to minimize multiple scattering of the relatively low momentum tracks produced at these facilities. A drift chamber using a helium based gas rather than a conventional argon based gas would greatly reduce the amount of multiple scattering. This paper summarizes measurements of the drift velocity and position resolution for gas mixtures of helium with CO{sub 2} and isobutane and helium with DME. Good spatial… more

Silicon drift chamber studies for the RHIC STAR experiment

Description: The two-hit resolution of a silicon drift chamber is measured using a pulsed Nd:Yag laser and a time digitizer readout. The data is analyzed by forming the covariance matrix in time samples, and transforming to a matrix in amplitude and time variation of each of the two hits. The resolution of the two-hit separation is found to be better than 25 microns with a drift field of 530 V/cm and a separation of more than 500 microns, with the resolution increasing to 50 microns as the separation nears … more

Prototype results of a high resolution vertex drift chamber for the Mark II SLC Upgrade detector

Description: Test results from a full-length prototype of the drift chamber vertex detector for the Mark II SLC Upgrade detector are presented. The 22 cell jet chamber employs planes of grid wires above and below the sense wire plane to increase the electrostatic stability of the sense wires and to narrow the electron arrival time distribution. Two different grid designs have been investigated. The spatial resolution and pulse widths have been measured at a variety of operating points and for different timi… more

Decays of the tau lepton

Description: Previous measurements of the branching fractions of the tau lepton result in a discrepancy between the inclusive branching fraction and the sum of the exclusive branching fractions to final states containing one charged particle. The sum of the exclusive branching fractions is significantly smaller than the inclusive branching fraction. In this analysis, the branching fractions for all the major decay modes are measured simultaneously with the sum of the branching fractions constrained to be on… more

Tests of a single-wire drift chamber for possible use in low intensity beams

Description: A single cell drift chamber with two dimensional readout has been evaluated as a candidate for reliable and inexpensive momentum tagging of low intensity calibration beams. Charges induced on shaped cathode pads allow a measurement of the coordinate parallel to the wire, while the drift time allows a measurement of the coordinate perpendicular to the wire. Two chamber orientations were used during the tests. In one the chambers were arranged with their wires parallel. In this case the intrinsic… more

Search for Neutrino Oscillations at the Brookhaven AGS

Description: We report on a search for neutrino oscillations of the type nu/sub ..mu../ ..-->.. nu/sub e/ in a detector located an effective distance of 96m from the neutrino source in the wide band neutrino beam at the Brookhaven AGS. No excess of electron events was observed. The resulting upper limit on the strength of the mixing between nu/sub ..mu../ and nu/sub e/ in the case of large mass difference ..delta..m/sup 2/ = absolute value m/sub 1//sup 2/ - m/sub 2//sup 2/ between the neutrino mass eigensta… more

Detector problems at the SSC

Description: During the last couple of years there has been considerable concern expressed among the US high energy community as to whether detector limitations would prevent one from being able to fully exploit a luminosity of 10/sup 33/ cm/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/ at a hadron-hadron high energy collider. As a result of these concerns, a considerable amount of work has been done recently in trying to understand the nature of potential difficulties and the required R and D that needs to be performed. A lot of th… more

Physics at e sup + e sup minus factories

Description: Feasible designs are well advanced for high-luminosity e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage rings which produce B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} pairs either at rest or, in what appears to be a more promising option, boosted in the detector frame. Facilities which could provide samples of 30--100 fb{sup {minus}1} per year on the {Upsilon}(4S) will be proposed in early 1991. Here we examine the principal physics goal of such B Factories, namely CP violation in the b system. Methods in a variety of channels, est… more

Both modes have a broad structure from 1.2 to 1.9 GeV/c/sup 2/ and two structures, which decay via delta/sup + -/..pi../sup - +/, delta/sup + -/ ..-->.. eta..pi../sup + -/, are identified at 1.28 and 1.39 GeV/c/sup 2/. Design of a lead-glass drift calorimeter with MWPC detection

Description: A drift collection calorimeter having a combined radiator and field-shaping structure made of lead-glass tubing is described. A high-resistance metallic layer is formed by reduction of the lead oxide at the surface of the glass and forms a continuous voltage divider for drift-field shaping. The energy resolution of such a calorimeter is modeled, for several configurations, by the Monte Carlo technique.

Response of the D0 Muon Chamber to changes in voltage, incident angle, gas composition, and oxygen contamination

Description: The measured space point resolution of a D0 Muon Chamber is /+-/0.31 mm perpendicular to the anode wire and 2.7 mm parallel to the wire. A voltage change of 1 kV, which changes the gas gain by a factor of 50, only causes a change of drift velocity of 12%. Tracks inclined of 45/degree/ have a resolution worse than those of 0/degree/ by a factor 3 /+-/ 2. A change in gas composition from CO/sub 2/(10%) to CO/sub 2/(11%) decreases the gas gain by 17 /+-/ 5%, and decreases drift velocity by 0.2 /+-… more

CDF Run 2 muon system

Description: The CDF muon detection system for Run 2 of the Fermilab Tevatron is described. Muon stubs are detected for |{eta}| < 1.5, and are matched to tracks in the central drift chamber at trigger level 1 for |{eta}| < 1.25. Detectors in the |{eta}| < 1 central region, built for previous runs, have been enhanced to survive the higher rate environment and closer bunch spacing (3.5 {micro}sec to 396 nsec) of Run 2. Azimuthal gaps in the central region have been filled in. New detectors have been … more

Description: An experimental search for the lepton-family number nonconserving decay, ..mu../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/..gamma gamma.., has been conducted at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) using the Crystal Box detector. The detector consists of a modular NaI(Tl) calorimeter, scintillator hodoscope, and a high-resolution, cylindrical drift chamber. It provides a large solid-angle for detecting three-body decays and has good resolutions in the time, position, and energy measurements to e… more

A study of jet rates and measurement of [alpha][sub S] at the Z[sup 0] resonance

Description: This experiment was performed with the SLD detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Only charged tracks measured in the central drift chamber were used for the measurement of the jet production rates. The value of the strong coupling [alpha][sub s](M[sub Z][sup o]) is determined from the production rates of jets in hadronic Z[sup 0] decays in e[sup +] e[sup [minus]] annihilations. The relative jet rates are obtained using the JADE-type algorithms. The results are compared with the je… more

A drift chamber telescope for high-Z particles

Description: Drift chambers are one of the position sensing technologies used in cosmic ray balloon and satellite experiments with potential application to the next generation of detectors for space flight. A low mass TPC type drift chamber, employing 8 distinct drift regions within a single gas volume has been built, tested and used at the LBL Bevalac. From the drift time X-coordinate, spatial resolutions below 100 {mu}m are obtained for a variety of heavy ions with selected trigger modes. The Y-coordinate… more
