Restoring Sustainable Forests on Appalachian Mined Lands for Wood Products, Renewable Energy, Carbon Sequestration, and Other Ecosystems Services Quarterly Report

Description: The overall purpose of this project is to evaluate the biological and economic feasibility of restoring high-quality forests on mined land, and to measure carbon sequestration and wood production benefits that would be achieved from forest restoration procedures. During the reporting period (October-December 2004) we completed the validation of a forest productivity classification model for mined land. A coefficient of determination (R{sup 2}) of 0.68 confirms the model's ability to predict SI … more

Restoring Sustainable Forests on Appalachian Mined Lands for Wood Products, Renewable Energy, Carbon Sequestration, and Other Ecosystems Services Quarterly Report

Description: This is the first quarterly Technical Report for the period October-December, 2003. A kick-off meeting was held with NETL administrators and scientists at Morgantown, WV, on December 2, 2002. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the biological and economic feasibility of restoring high-quality forests on mined land, and to measure carbon sequestration and wood production benefits that would be achieved from forest restoration procedures. During this first quarterly reporting period, five … more

CdSiAs/sub 2/ thin films for solar cell applications. Third quarter report, October 1, 1979-December 31, 1979

Description: Sputtering studies (single composite target; CdAs/sub 2/ + Si) of CdSiAs/sub 2/ films have continued. An improved substrate has been developed (Ta film on 7059 glass) for post-deposition heat treatments, although films still have mechanical defects. High resistivity (rho > 10/sup 6/ ..cap omega.. ..mu..m) polycrystalline p-type films with optical cutoff at 1.53 eV and absorption coefficient of approx. 2 x 10/sup 4/ cm/sup -1/ at 0.6 ..mu..m have been obtained. CdS/CdSiAs/sub 2/ and In/CdSiAs/su… more

[Investigations in dynamics of gauge theories in theoretical particle physics]

Description: The major theme of the theoretical physics research conducted under DOE support over the past several years has been within the rubric of the standard model, and concerned the interplay between symmetries and dynamics. The research was thus carried out mostly in the context of gauge field theories, and usually in the presence of chiral fermions. Dynamical symmetry breaking was examined both from the point of view of perturbation theory, as well as from non-perturbative techniques associated wit… more

Engineering Development of Advanced Physical Fine Coal Cleaning Technologies: Froth Flotation

Description: Work completed produced the criteria for additional engineering analysis, computation and detailed experimental benchscale testing for areas of uncertainty. The engineering analysis, computation, bench-scale testing and component development was formulated to produce necessary design information to define a commercially operating system. In order to produce the required information by means of bench-scale testing and component development, a uniform coal sample was procured. After agreement wit… more
