Preliminary spectrometer results from E-802

Description: This report presents preliminary spectrometer results from the E-802 experiment at the Tandem-AGS accelerator complex at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data presented were taken in late April of 1987 using a 14.5 GeV/c per nucleon /sup 28/Si beam from the AGS. Data were obtained for a variety of targets and spectrometer settings, but we present here the analysis of data for one target-angle combination: a Au target wth the spectrometer spanning 14/sup 0/ to 28/sup 0/ in the lab. At this en… more

Glueballs of QCD and beyond

Description: There are two methods discussed by which glueballs might be found. In the first, an OZI suppressed channel with variable mass is used, such as the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n. The breakdown of the OZI suppression is the glueball signal. The OZI suppression is a filter letting glueballs pass while strongly rejecting conventional hadronic states. The other method is to look in a channel enriched in gluons such as the radiative decay of the J/psi and search for new phenomena, such as… more

Search for rare muon and pion decay modes with the crystal box detector

Description: New experiental upper limits for the branching ratios of the lepton-family-number nonconserving decays ..mu../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/..gamma.. and ..mu../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/..gamma gamma.. are presented. A new determination of ..gamma.., the ratio of pion axial vector to vector form factors, from radiative pion decay is also reported. These results are from data taken with the Crystal Box detector at LAMPF. 11 refs., 7 figs.

Glueball resonance and alternative explanations of the reaction. pi. /sup -/p. -->. phi phi n*

Description: The observation of three resonances (in the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n) which break down the OZI suppression was attributed to the production of these states by 1-3 glueball(s). The final partial wave analysis of approx. = 4000 phi phi n events was presented and agrees with prior publications within errors. Alternative explanations in terms of otherwise explaining the OZI suppression breakdown or finding other kinematic mechanisms to explain the BNL/CCNY data are discussed and fo… more

The Argand amplitudes for the phi phi events from p yields phi phi n at 22 GeV/c

Description: We obtained the Argand plots for the three phi phi I/sup G/J/sup PC/ = 0 2 amplitudes, which completely describe our 6658 events (after a 13% background subtraction) coming from the reaction p phi phi n at 22 GeV/c. The essential part of this determination is the partial wave analysis of the background reaction p phi K K n (1934 events).

Entrance Channel Limitations in the High Energy Fusion of Light-Heavy Systems Leading to /sup 40/Ca and /sup 42/Ca

Description: The question of compound nucleus or entrance channel-type limitation to the fusion cross section has been approached effectively in experiments where the same compound nucleus is populated by different projectile-target combinations. Fusion data are available for several systems leading to the compound nuclei /sup 40/Ca and /sup 42/Ca. In this study we report on measurements of fusion cross sections done on /sup 28/Si + /sup 12/C and /sup 30/Si + /sup 2/C over a wide range of bombarding energie… more

High nuclear temperatures by antimatter-matter annihilation

Description: It is suggested that the quark-gluon phase be created through the use of antiproton or antideuteron beams. The first advantage to this method, using higher energy antiprotons than 1.5 GeV/c, is that the higher momenta antiprotons penetrate more deeply so that mesons produced are more nearly contained within the nucleus. Another advantage is that the annihilation products are very forward-peaked and tend to form a beam of mesons so that the energy density does not disperse very rapidly. Calculat… more

New results for rare muon decays

Description: Branching-ratio limits obtained with the Crystal Box detector are presented for the rare muon decays ..mu.. ..-->.. eee, ..mu.. ..-->.. e..gamma.., and ..mu.. ..-->.. e..gamma gamma... These decays, which violate the conservation of separate lepton-family numbers, are expected to occur in many extensions to the standard model. We found no candidates for the decay ..mu.. ..-->.. eee, yielding an upper limit for the branching ratio of B/sub ..mu..3e/ < 3.1 x 10/sup -11/ (90% C.L.). A maximum-like… more

Increased statistics in. pi. /sup -/p. -->. phi phi n and the status of glueball production

Description: The statistics for the OZI forbidden reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n have been doubled to a total of 6658 events, allowing extension of the phi phi partial wave analysis. A three-pole K-matrix fit was also obtained and Breit Wigners parameters deduced. Mass spectra, amplitudes from the partial wave analysis, and Argand diagrams for each wave are given. (LEW)

The decay of hot nuclei formed in La-induced reactions at E/A=45 MeV

Description: The decay of hot nuclei formed in the reactions [sup 139]La + [sup 27]Al, [sup 51]V, [sup nat]Cu, and [sup 139]La were studied by the coincident detection of up to four complex fragments (Z > 3) emitted in these reactions. Fragments were characterized as to their atomic number, energy and in- and out-of-plane angles. The probability of the decay by an event of a given complex fragment multiplicity as a function of excitation energy per nucleon of the source is nearly independent of the system s… more

New Results on Mesons Containing Strange Quarks

Description: Recent results of strange and strangeonium mesons are presented. The data come from a high sensitivity study (4.1 ev/nb) of K/sup -/p interactions at 11 GeV/c using the LASS spectrometer at SLAC. The complete leading orbitally-excited K* series up through J/sup P/ = 5/sup -/ and a substantial number of the expected underlying states are observed decaying into K/sup -/..pi../sup +/, anti K/sub 3//sup 0/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/, and K eta final states, and new measurements are made of their mas… more

Study of K/sup +/K/sub s/. pi. /sup -/ final state produced by. pi. /sup -/ and anti p beams

Description: We observe the production of D and E mesons in the reactions ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. K/sup +/K/sub s/..pi../sup -/n at 8 GeV/c and anti pp ..-->.. K/sup +/K/sub s/..pi../sup -/ + X at 6.5 GeV/c. A qualitative study of the Dalitz plot indicates that, unlike the D mesons, the E mesons observed in the ..pi../sup -/p induced reaction have different decay characteristics from those observed in the anti pp induced reaction. 7 references.

Resonances in the phi phi system and glueballs

Description: The mass spectrum and the final partial wave analysis of the OZI forbidden reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n are shown. A unique good fit solution was found which selected only three I/sup G/J/sup PC/ = 0/sup +/2/sup 2 +/ waves with J/sub z/sup e+a/ = 0/sup -/ in the Gottfried Jackson frame. The partial wave amplitude and phase behavior clearly indicated resonant behavior. A three-pole K-matrix fit corresponded to a good fit whereas a two-pole fit was rejected. It is found that the disc… more

Results of two scattering processes:. pi pi. -->. phi phi and. pi pi. -->. K anti K

Description: An analysis is presented of 6658 events of the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n at 22 GeV/c. This data is well represented by three resonances, all with quantum numbers I/sup G/J/sup PC/ = 0/sup +/2/sup + +/. In a second analysis, which consists of 40494 new events of the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. K/sub s//sup 0/K/sub s//sup 0/n at 22 GeV/c, we obtain the S/sub 0/, D/sub 0/ and G/sub 0/ Argand amplitudes for ..pi pi.. ..-->.. K anti K. The theta (1690) is shown to decay into ..pi… more

Partial Wave Analysis of K anti K pi System in the D and E/iota Regions

Description: We have performed a partial-wave analysis of the K/sup +/ anti K/sup 0/..pi../sup -/ system produced in the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. K/sup +/ anti K/sup 0/..pi../sup -/n at 8.0 GeV/c. We find that the D(1285) is a J/sup PG/ = 1/sup + +/ state coupling predominantly to a delta..pi.. decay channel, while the E(1420) peak consists mostly of a J/sup PG/ = 0/sup - +/ wave with a substantial delta..pi.. decay mode. There is little evidence of a 1/sup + +/ resonance at the E mass.

Partial Wave Analysis of KKPI System in D and E/IOTA Region

Description: A partial wave analysis and a Dalitz plot analysis of high-statistics data from reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. K/sup +/K/sub S/..pi../sup -/n at 8.0 GeV/c show that the D(1285) is a J/sup PG/ = 1/sup + +/ state and the E(1420) a J/sup PG/ = 0/sup - +/ state both with a substantial delta..pi.. decay mode. The 1/sup + +/ K*anti K wave exhibits a rapid rise near threshold but no evidence of a resonance in the E region. The assignment of J/sup PG/ = O/sup - +/ to the E is confirmed from a Dalitz-p… more
