Dependence of secondary ion emission from organic material on the energy loss of the impacting heavy ion

Description: Samples of the amino acid valine were irradiated by 2.5 MeV-Ar, 0.8 MeV-Kr and 1.0 MeV Xe beams from the Argonne Dynamitron accelerator in order to study the energy distributions of ejected secondary ions. For Kr and Xe the nuclear stopping power exceeded the electronic stopping power by a factor 2 or 3, respectively, but the functional shape of the energy distributions and the mean ejection energies (0.9--1.4 eV) indicated that the molecular ions (M{plus minus}H){sup {plus minus}} are desorbed… more

Neutralization of H/sup -/ beams with gas jets

Description: A test facility was constructed to create a compact curtain-shaped gas jet as a first-generation operational neutralizer for the 150 keV H/sup -/ beam. Different gases and vapors were considered, their optimum target thicknesses and neutralization efficiencies with respect to beam energies were explored. Two techniques of gas jet formation were compared. Multiparallel-channel effusive jets of CO/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/ were selected as test candidates.

Summary of the working group on the construction and demonstration of a Siberian Snake

Description: It was recognized as long ago as the 1977 Ann Arbor Meeting on Higher Energy Polarized Proton Beams that a ''Siberian Snake'' should be built and tested in an operating accelerator. A program to accomplish this at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) was part of a proposal to DOE to construct a small R and D accelerator at ANL. This was never implemented and between then and now many theory papers have been written but no Proof of Principle Experiment (POPE) has been done. The present Ann Arbor wo… more

RFQ development at LBL

Description: LBL's interest in RFQ accelerators goes back to 1978. We have developed, constructed and operated a heavy ion machine that is the central part of an upgrade project in which our old proton injector linac is converted to a light ion injector system. We are now designing a second heavy ion RFQ linac which will be used at CERN for the injection of light ions into the PS complex. Other RFQ accelerators are under study for possible additional projects. LBL has pioneered new techniques, such as the v… more

FXR one-nanosecond-jitter switch

Description: A switching system using low-jitter spark gaps has been designed for a 20 MeV Flash X-Ray (FXR) linear induction accelerator that is being built at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The accelerator, which is now under construction, will consist of 54 modules connected in tandem. Each module will contribute up to 400 keV of energy to the electron beam traversing it. The experimental work included a test of one accelerator module designed to produce 400 keV. Of particular concern was th… more

Search for magnetic dipole strength and giant spin-flip resonances in heavy nuclei. [120 to 200 MeV]

Description: A description is given of the use of high-resolution (n,n) scattering and the (p,n) reaction as tools to investigate highly excited states, with emphasis on information pertaining to magnetic dipole strength and giant spin-flip resonances in heavy nuclei. It is shown how the ability to determine uniquely the spins and parities of resonances observed in neutron scattering has been instrumental to an understanding of the distribution of M1 strength in /sup 207/ /sup 208/Pb. Some recent results of… more

Differential cross sections for electron emission in heavy ion-atom collisions

Description: The systematics of differential ionization cross sections are explored for incident charged particles which possess atomic structure. Although little has been published regarding outer shell ionization by structured projectiles, sufficient data are becoming available to provide some insight into the collision process. This discussion concentrates on systematics of emission cross sections for the intermediate and high energy projectiles where the applicability of high energy approximations can b… more

Neutron cross section measurements at WNR

Description: The Weapons Neutron Research Facility has been used to obtain moderate-resolution total neutron cross section data for H, C, /sup 208/Pb, /sup 232/Th, /sup 238/U, and /sup 242/Pu over the energy range 5 to 200 MeV. Neutrons were produced by bombarding a 2.5-cm diam by 15-cm long Ta target with an 800 MeV pulsed proton beam from LAMPF. A 10.2-cm diam by 15.2-cm thick NE110 proton recoil detector was used at a flight path of 32 meters, giving a time-of-flight resolution of 60 ps/m. The total cros… more

MEQALAC rf accelerating structure

Description: A prototype MEQALAC capable of replacing the Cockcroft Walton pre-injector at BNL is being fabricated. Ten milliamperes of H/sup -/ beam supplied from a source sitting at a potential of -40 kilovolt is to be accelerated to 750 keV. This energy gain is provided by a 200 Megahertz accelerating system rather than the normal dc acceleration. Substantial size and cost reduction would be realized by such a system over conventional pre-accelerator systems.

Low beta accelerating system for heavy ions

Description: To investigate the performance that can be achieved for low energy heavy ion particle acceleration, a two megahertz low beta linac is being built. This structure, intended for acceleration of 260 keV xenon or 400 keV mercury, is comprised of a quarter wavelength parallel plate resonator used to support drift tubes forming a ..beta.. lambda/2 structure. The 20 gap accelerator, to be driven by a 30 kilowatt transmitter, will provide 10 milliamperes of mercury ions at the 1.8 MeV energy level. Foc… more

Foil dissociation of fast molecular ions into atomic excited states

Description: The intensity and polarizations of light emitted from atomic excited states of dissociated molecular ions were measured. The dissociations are induced when fast molecular ions (50 to 500 keV/amu) are transmitted through thin carbon foils. A calculation of multiple scattering and the Coulomb explosion gives the average internuclear separation of the projectile at the foil surface. Experimentally, the foil thickness is varied to give varying internuclear separations at the foil surface and observ… more

Interactions of fast molecular ions with matter

Description: There are many interesting aspects of the interactions of fast ions with matter that can be explored using molecular-ion projectiles. At high velocities, these projectiles dissociate rapidly (approx. 10/sup -17/ sec) upon entering a solid. Each projectile then results in a tight cluster of fragments which continue into the solid closely correlated in space and in time. Recent high-resolution studies on the trajectories of such fragments, their energy losses, their shifts in angle and energy, th… more

Operation of repetitively pulsed 300 kV, 20 kA electron beam diode

Description: Repetitively pulsed diodes will be required for most of the proposed inertially confined fusion systems, yet little information is available on the operation of vacuum beam diodes under repetitive conditions. Most data are relevant to laser exciter/sustainer diodes operating at low current density (< 1 A/cm/sup 2/) for long pulses. As such they are of marginal value for estimating the properties of repetitive high current density diodes such as will be required for particle beam and some gas la… more
