Summary of the linac based radiation sources working group

Description: Technological advances have occurred in the past few years that have made linac based Free-Electron Lasers (FEL) promising candidates for the generation of short wavelength radiation. Although the FELs use undulators or wigglers, they produce stimulated radiation rather than the spontaneous emission found in insertion devices on the second and third generation sources of today. This stimulated emission process endows the FEL with properties presenting unique opportunities in many fields of scie… more

Experimental test of hole-coupled FEL resonator designs using a CW-HeNe laser

Description: We report on ongoing experiments and simulations which model the performance of hole-coupled resonators. We have previously studied a hole-coupled resonator which was well inside the stable region (stability parameter g = {minus}0.8). In the far field, good agreement between experiment and simulation was obtained for both the intracavity and outcoupled mode-profile. The present study involves a resonator with a stability parameter of {minus}0.987, identical to the stability parameter of the pro… more

Collective effects in isochronous storage rings

Description: We studied the collective instabilities in isochronous storage rings using a linac-type analysis. Simple criteria for avoiding the longitudinal and transverse instabilities are developed by employing a two-particle model. Numerical examples show that these conditions do not impose serious performance restrictions for two of the currently proposed isochronous storage rings.

High-brightness electron beams for production of high intensity, coherent radiation for scientific and industrial applications.

Description: Relativistic electron beams with high six-dimensional phase space densities, i.e., high-brightness beams, are the basis for efficient generation of intense and coherent radiation beams for advanced scientific and industrial applications. The remarkable progress in synchrotrons radiation facilities from the first generation to the current, third-generation capability illustrates this point. With the recent development of the high-brightness electron gun based on laser-driven rf photocathodes, li… more

The equation of motion of an electron : a debate in classical and quantum physics.

Description: The current status of understanding of the equation of motion of an electron is summarized. Classically, a consistent, linearized theory exists for an electron of finite extent, as long as the size of the electron is larger than the classical electron radius. Nonrelativistic quantum mechanics seems to offer a tine theory even in the point-particle limit.
