Low-Flow Characteristics of Wisconsin Streams at Sewage-Treatment Plants

Description: Abstract: Low-flow characteristics of Wisconsin streams at 415 sewage-treatment plants are presented in this report. The low-flow characteristics presented are the annual minimum 7-day mean flow that occurs on the average of once in 2 years and the annual minimum 7-day mean flow that occurs on the average of once in 10 years. The low-flow characteristics at most sewage-treatment plants were determined by correlating baseflow measurements at the sewage-treatment plants to the concurrent daily me… more

Monthly and Annual Water Budgets of Lake Wingra, Madison, Wisconsin, 1972-1977

Description: From abstract: This report presents estimated annual and monthly water budgets for lake Wingra and the adjacent wetland area for January 1972 through September 1977. Annually, inputs from precipitation, surface runoff, and ground-water inflow are approximately equal (31, 34, and 35 percent, respectively). Outputs include outflow from the lake into Murphy Creek (70 percent), evotranspiration from the lake and wetland (26 percent), and ground-water outflow (4 percent).

Recycling Ground Water in Waushara County, Wisconsin: Resource Management for Cold-Water Fish Hatcheries

Description: Recycling water within the local ground-water system is an effective means to increase quantity and control water temperature of the water supply and to control or avoid environmental pollution. A fish-rearing facility, operated for 15 months, returned water to the local ground-water system through an infiltration pond and recycled 83 percent of its water supply. For each 100 gallons pumped the net stress on the aquifer was equivalent to withdrawing 17 gallons. Despite recycling, nutrient conte… more

Pre-Cambrian Rocks of the Lake Superior Region: A Review of Newly Discovered Geologic Features, with a Revised Geologic Map

Description: From abstract: Detailed knowledge of the geology of the pre-Cambrian rocks of the Lake Superior region has been greatly augmented since the publication of Monograph 52 by the United States Geological Survey in 1911. The authors have attempted in the present report to assemble as much of this new information as possible, and to give the reader a birdseye view of the geology as seen in the light of all studies made there up to the present time. Detailed descriptions are not presented, and the emp… more

National Uranium Resource Evaluation: Eau Claire Quadrangle, Wisconsin and Minnesota

Description: Purpose and scope: The Eau Claire Quadrangle, Wisconsin and Minnesota, was evaluated to identify geologic units and delineate areas that exhibit characteristics favorable for the occurrence of uranium deposits. All geologic environments to a depth of 1500 m (5,000 ft) were evaluated by means of surface investigations and available subsurface data. Each environment was categorized as favorable, unfavorable, or unevaluated for uranium deposits based on recognition criteria contained in the study … more

Hydrology and Water Quality in the Nederlo Creek Basin, Wisconsin, Before Construction of Two Water-Retention Structures

Description: From introduction: This study was begun in 1967 in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of natural Resources (DNR)--its purpose was to evaluate the effects of construction of a reservoir and a floodwater-retention structure on the hydrologic system and water quality in a small basin in southwestern Wisconsin. In 1968, Federal research funds were obtained to provide for more detailed study of water quality and to extend the scope of the study to include aquatic biota.

Effects of a Floodwater-Retarding Structure on the Hydrology and Ecology of Trout Creek in Southwestern Wisconsin

Description: Abstract: The primary effect of a floodwater-retarding structure (FRS) on the flow of Trout Creek, Wisconsin, is attenuation of flood peaks. Reduction of flood peaks ranged from 58 to 91 percent during the study period, 1975 to 1979. An inverse relationship exists between sediment concentration and outflow from the FRS during floods. Most sediment stored in the flood pool during floods is released from the reservoir during subsequent reduced discharge. Sediment-trapping efficiency of the FRS wa… more

Low-Flow Characteristics of Wisconsin Streams at Sewage-Treatment Plants and Industrial Plants

Description: From abstract: The purpose of this report is to present low-flow characteristics of Wisconsin streams at sewage-treatment and industrial plants. The low-flow characteristics are needed to implement water-quality standards for all surface waters of the State. Water-quality standards in Wisconsin are based on the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 10 years.
