Organic materials for second harmonic generation. Final report

Description: Materials were chosen by screening the Cambridge Crystallographic Index for new noncentrosymmetric crystalline compounds, by screening commercially available materials or by synthesis of unique new substances. Measurements were then made on the powder form of these materials. Langmuir-Blodgett films were deposited and studied. In addition to the above studies, a computer program was developed to calculate (hyper) polarizabilities of organic molecules and thus aid in the selection of materials f… more

Design of a harmonic generation FEL experiment at BNL

Description: We present design parameters of a harmonic generation FEL experiment to be carried out at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at BNL. This experiment out as a proof-of-principle for the proposed UV-FEL User`s Facility at BNL. In the experiment we plan to triple the frequency of a CO{sub 2} seed laser by utilizing two superconducting wigglers and a dispersive section. The first wiggler will be used in conjunction with the CO{sub 2} seed laser to generate a ponderomotive force that will bunch the… more

Overview of Phase Space Manipulations of Relativistic Electron Beams

Description: Phase space manipulation is a process to rearrange beam's distribution in 6-D phase space. In this paper, we give an overview of the techniques for tailoring beam distribution in 2D, 4D, and 6D phase space to meet the requirements of various applications. These techniques become a new focus of accelerator physics R&D and very likely these advanced concepts will open up new opportunities in advanced accelerators and the science enabled by them.

Articles including thin film monolayers and multilayers

Description: This invention pertains to thin film assemblies or devices useful as sensors, nonlinear optical materials, and trace material scavengers. It claims a base substrate having an oxide surface layer, and a multidentate ligand, capable of binding a metal ion, attached to the oxide surface layer of the base substrate. A metal species may be provided attached to the ligand, and a multifunctional organic ligand may be provided attached to the metal species. A second metal species may be provided attach… more

Development of a new plasma diagnostic of the critical surface and studies of the ion acoustic decay instability using collective Thomson scattering. Final report

Description: We have developed 5-channel collective Thomson scattering system to measure the ion acoustic wave excited by the ion acoustic wave decay instabilities. The multichannel collective Thomson scattering technique was established with 4{omega} probe laser beam using GDL laser system at LLE, Univ. of Rochester. We have obtained the ionic charge state Z by measuring the second harmonic emission from the ion acoustic decay instability. The LASNEX computer simulation calculations have been carried out. … more

Laser-synchrotron hybrid experiments: ``A photon to tickle, a photon to poke``

Description: In this paper we present the preliminary results from a new experimental technique to synchronize the pulses from a mode-locked NdYAG laser to the light pulses in the VUV storage ring at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS). We describe a method to electronically change the delay time between the laser pulses and the synchrotron pulses. We also illustrate a method to overlap the synchrotron pulses with the laser pulses in space and time. Preliminary results will be presented for two exp… more

Magnetic field measurements of the harmonic generation FEL superconducting undulator at BNL-NSLS

Description: A three stage superconducting undulator (modulator, dispersive section, and radiator) is under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Sections of the radiator, consisting of 25cm long steel yokes, each with 18mm period, 0.54 Tesla field, and 8.6mm gap are under test. The magnetic measurements and operational characteristics of the magnet are discussed. Measurement results and analysis are presented, with emphasis on the integrated field quality. The magnet winding and the effects of th… more

Measurement and control of optical nonlinearities of importance to glass laser fusion systems

Description: Results of a number of studies carried out at Los Alamos, both experimental and theoretical, of nonlinear optical phenomena important to the design of the National Ignition Facility are summarized. These include measurements of nonlinear index coefficients, Raman scattering in atmospheric oxygen, and theoretical studies of harmonic conversion. The measurements were made by two different techniques in order to increase confidence in the results. One method was an application of a recently-develo… more

Detecting and characterizing ferroelectric domain boundaries using nonphase-matched second harmonic generation

Description: We demonstrate that tilted planar ferroelectric domain boundaries create tilted second harmonic beams in nonphase-matched second harmonic generation, and that the tilt of the boundary can be deduced from the harmonic direction.

Using optical parametric oscillators (OPO) for wavelength shifting IR images to visible spectrum

Description: The authors have carried out preliminary investigations into coherent imaging using Optical Parametric Oscillators (OPO) for wavelength conversion of near IR images to visible spectrum. A nonlinear crystal, second harmonic generator (SHG), was used for degenerate optical parametric up-conversion. A Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (KTP) doubling crystal was used to convert incident 1,540 nm flux to 772 nm. Experiments included investigation of spatial resolution and responsivity of the OPO. Spatial … more

Third-harmonic performance of the Beamlet prototype laser

Description: The Beamlet laser is a nearly full-scale, single-aperture prototype of the driver design for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). As part of a test and validation plan for the NIF design, Beamlet was recently equipped with final focusing optics and diagnostics for the purpose of evaluating integrated component performance and equivalent target-plane irradiance conditions at the 0.351-{mu}m output wavelength specified for NIF targets. A 37-cm aperture two-crystal converter scheme generates the … more

Inorganic materis for anomalous-dispersion phase-matched second harmonic generation: Rubidium titanyl arsenate isomorphs, Rb[Ti{sub 1-2x}Ln{sub x}Nb{sub x}]OAsO{sub 4}

Description: We report the synthesis and optical properties of Rb[Ti{sub 1-2x}Ln{sub x}Nb{sub x}]OAsO{sub 4}. The solid solubility of lanthanide ions in the materials decreases exponentially as the size of the lanthanide ion increases. The materials exhibit absorption spectra characteristic of the particular lanthanide ion in the structure. The spectral regions between absorption peaks are transparent and will allow the transmission of fundamental and second-harmonic radiation. The charge transfer band is r… more

[Monitoring interfacial dynamics by pulsed laser techniques]. [Annual report, August 1, 1988--July 31, 1989]

Description: Goal is the development and application of new optical methods to the study of dynamic processes at the electrode/electrolyte interface. The technique which was primarily focused on was second harmonic generation (SHG) because of its suitability for probing buried interfaces. A photothermal deflection spectroscopy station was also built for broad band study of the absorptivity of the interface. Dynamic processes initiated by either a fast potential step or a fast photoexcitation pulse was inves… more
