Flow visualizations, velocity measurements, and surface convection measurements in simulated 20. 8-cm Nova box amplifier cavities

Description: Reported are fluid mechanics experiments performed in models of the 20.8-cm Nova amplifier lamp and disk cavities. Lamp cavity nitrogen flows are shown, by both flow visualization and velocity measurements, to be acceptably uniform and parallel to the flashlamps. In contrast, the nitrogen flows in the disk cavity are shown to be disordered. Even though disk cavity flows are disordered, the simplest of three proposed nitrogen introduction systems for the disk cavity was found to be acceptable ba… more

Cadmium sulfide/copper sulfide heterojunction cell research. Quarterly technical progress report, February 26-May 31, 1979

Description: All-vacuum sputter deposited heterojunction solar cells of the CdS/Cu/sub 2/S and Cd/sub 1-x/Zn/sub x/S/Cu/sub 2/S types have been fabricated on glass substrates by dc reactive sputtering using cylindrical-post magnetron sputtering sources and Ar-H/sub 2/S working gases. The rear electrode is Nb. The top grid electrode is Au sputter deposited through a mechanical mask. Preliminary measurements on nonoptimized cells have yielded efficiencies of about 0.4% with short circuit currents of about 3 m… more

SNAP Programs. Thermionic Isotopic Power Systems. Quarterly Progress Report No. 6, January 1 Through March 31, 1961

Description: Progress in thermionic technology necessary for the development of power supplies utilizing radioisotopes as heat sources is reviewed. An investigation was made of the characteristics of cesium-filled thermionic converters operating in the low temperature region. Parametric studies were made of the cesium diode with a tantalum emitter and no back emission and operational characteristics were determined in the collision-free region. Work was continued on the vacuum diode generator, with emphasis… more

Applied Mathematics Division Summary Report, July 1, 1962 Through June 30, 1963

Description: Summaries of the computer programs initiated or modified are listed, and the programs developed for the GUS digital computer complex are described. Information included in bulletins or newsletters on computers is indicated, and the new routines for the IBM-704, IBM-1401, and GEORGE are listed. The computer equipment (including GEORGE) presently available for computations is briefly described. An automatic data processing system (CHLOE) was developed for spark chamber photograph analysis. It use… more

SNAP Programs. Quarterly Progress Report No. 3 for April 1 through June 30, 1960

Description: Design studies were made for the cooling, shielding, and electrical- control support systems required for the testing of the isotope-fueled 125-w generator in a hot-cell facility. A ceric oxide fuel containing 10 wt.% SiC exhibited suitable burn-up characteristics in simulated postorbital re-entry heating conditions. Inconel X was selected as the fuelcontainment material. Negative pitch angle injections were evaluated for the injection-stage flight vehicle. The second electrically heated 125-w … more
